Transfer Rumour Luis Diaz

Well it would be a terrible acquisition if he was the back up option. Burnley will absolutely fleece us on deadline day and we need at least one star player in this side.

DCL?
Richarlison?

Wouldn't say we need a star mate just good players that suit the system.

We had a star in James Rodriguez and finished 10th last season.

McNeil isn’t going to join Everton to sit on the bench. Regardless Burnley would want a stupid amount.
I read that as him meaning that Diaz would be the second transfer target if Diaz falls through.

Would be pointless to try and fit both into the same side. McNeil's one real asset is crossing, and he would limit that by being shipped onto the right and Diaz (although able to use both feet) would limit his goalscoring by being shipped onto the right.

Aside from the fact that to sign both would end up costing us about £80m!

Right. To your final point I would ask, just how low would we have finished last year without James' contributions then?

Love Richarlison and DCL, but they are not the kind of players that can win games on their own. Diaz is. I agree that there is nothing wrong with getting in players to fit the team and with the right attitude. But some genuine star quality is needed.

We've only played some poor and some okay teams so far. Watch how much we struggle against better teams without any real quality.

Ha, they've both already won us plenty of games on their own? Not arguing with you RE James, he's a level above what we have in terms of quality but fundamentally if he doesn't want to be here because his favourite boss has buggered off then bye bye.

If no deal is done Benitez should put aside any prejudice and get James in the squad. Even if as an impact sub'

Maybe some here haven't noticed, but the he can play.
Definitely agree, we have a soft run and in a similar position to last season. James would be a great option off the bench against tiring defenders or when we need to get a goal.

But winning games on your own, really refers to moments of individual brilliance to win games. Richie and DCL don't do that. They score goals that have won us games, but we need someone who can flip a game in our favour.

Yes, if James wants to go, we can't stop it but we should he looking for a bit of star quality to replace him. My point with McNeil is that we would be paying the kind of fee for a wide player that should guarantee star quality. But we would be signing a player that just likes to cross the ball. It would be a huge waste of money.

We've already signed a wide player who works hard and likes to cross the ball. Townsend cost us nothing. All in, McNeil would cost us more than Diaz, which would be shocking business - it really would.

We got battered at home by sides like Sheffield Utd last season with Mr VIP on the pitch.

Richarlison has now become a central player so our only wide options presently are Gray, Iwobi & Townsend.

If Diaz comes in great but if not we could do a lot worse than McNeil who is a similiar player to Townsend but younger and better.

Incredibly low benchmark there. Guessing you are happy for us to remain mid-table for the next 5 years too then? Signing players like McNeil for over £30 million will inhibit us financially and won't push us on at the rate it should for a transfer of that fee.

We also got points from games like Leicester away, Liverpool and Spurs, Utd away etc etc. that we would have been nowhere near achieving without 'Mr VIP's individual brilliance. Plus, when we play better sides, his ability to find space and keep the ball under pressure will be really missed.
