Lukaku - A Fond Farewell

IMHO in order for a player to enter the elite category of greatness, he should excel all over the pitch, and be a true team player. If he was truly great he would have had fantastic hold up play (not rubber shins), would have given his all for the team in every game (not downed tools and sulked or moaned about going elsewhere at every opportunity) and would be a true inspiration to others and led the line.

Perhaps we are just talking about semantics, but regardless of his outstanding goal tally, he will just be remembered as a prolific goal scorer to me, which, as I pointed out, is kind of a big deal, but I cannot right now see us erecting a statue to him outside of Goodison, or the new stadium come to that.

Agree with this and would just add that he just didn't have the attitude for greatness. Lots of goals but always seemed to have one foot out the door.

to be honest i'm glad to see the back of him. yesterday was a xlassic Lukaku performance, he did literally nothing all game, save for when we took off our defenders to chase the game he capitalised on the space to grab a poxy third goal. Rooney was much more influential yesterday than Rom would have been if he's been playing for us.

Glad we're both happy with our respective players.

For Everton maybe not for us.

Of course for you as well, he plays for himself not the club, great players give %100 no matter what shirt they have on, dont forget the guy is openly obsessed with Chelsea for some odd reason, the only thing that will go in Uniteds favor is his his chum Pogba being there, but if you think he will grind out a result single handedly when the team are having a bad game your in for a shock.

Wait until you run into a proper side with quality defenders, like Chelsea or Tottenham, or one of the Champions League latter stage regulars. That's when you'll see what he's made of.

If you'd like a preview, have a look at how he performed when Belgium found themselves facing serious opposition at the Euros and World Cup; and that was with players at the level of Hazard and de Bruyne backing him up.

The likes of Fellaini & Arteta did this, worked there socks of while at the club and left amicibly (although with fellaini being belgian obviously while he was with us his dad did spout off a couple of times).
But they never seemed to receive any stick from our fans

That's not even true though. Fellani and his old man were just as bad as Lukaku in the press, and Arteta went to Bill and cried in his office begging to be let go, and played like a snide every time we played against him.

We played vs Madrid and he was superb albeit missed a good chance but scored.

Yeah I saw that game. You really have low expectations if you believe he was superb. The ones he missed cost you the game. The one he scored was when you were already beat. We know all about that. :)

Felt he made the right decision from a football perspective because Utd tend to play on the break. At Chelsea, he would have been up against a bus every week and could see it going badly for him there. We ended up so one dimensional with him leading the line.
