Lukaku. Yes or no

Tbf Rom turned up and kept them alive last week and in another game he turned up only for his work to be undone by Vidal giving away two goals on his own. He scored 4 goals in 5 appearances against 3 good teams. This isn't on him anymore than anyone else in that side.
He scored four goals against Borussia Monchengladbach, you sneaky get.

How much is he paying you?

I genuinely didn't realize they were all against them lol. Still Vidal in the groups has given away a penalty and gotten sent off, Lautaro (who a certain poster will tell you is the sole reason Rom is scoring) has barely showed up and they've conceded goals when put under basically any pressure and yet it is somehow all Rom's fault yet again.

I know he could always do a bit more but he's been on the shortlist for best Inter player in the competition.

He does seem to be their main man, with or without Lautaro.

I'll just never be able to accept the idea that a lad who struggles to control the ball is one of the world's great players, which is what his fans are forever trying to claim.

I mean his ceiling is probably being a bottom half of the top 10 strikers in the world type level which isn't really that bad is it? Inter are a fairly successful team and he's a pretty big part of that which also isn't bad.

I also think his technical failings are overexaggerated. So what if he isn't Toni Kroos? Honestly the one thing that is really a fair criticism is he really isn't doing much out of possession. And honestly given how big the guy is he probably can't and last a whole match.

I think he's a fantastic player for teams that are just grateful to have a goalscorer (eg Everton), but I watched him long enough to know that he's not fit for a serious team looking to win the top prizes.

There are some technical aspects to his game that are overlooked, most notably his ability to play a defence-splitting pass, but his first touch is unreliable, he struggles to operate in tight spaces and he simply does not have the stomach for a physical battle (he was, for example, deathly afraid of going near Dejan Lovren in derbies). These limitations have always and will always hold him back when it comes to competing at the very highest level, which is why he's had to drop down a level to rebuild his reputation after becoming a bit of a laughing stock at United.

Funny you should mention the criticism about his off-the-ball contributions, as that never really bothered me. A man his size doesn't need to be expending energy unnecessarily, especially when his link play isn't up to much anyway.

This Inter team is better than anything he ever played with at United. At worst that was a sideways move, but honestly he might have gone to a club more likely to win trophies during his career.

His first year at United, when he was a regular, they had these four as the rest of the top 5 most used outfield players in the league: Matic, Valencia, Smalling, Young. Rom wasn't holding United back.

The physical thing has changed. He is a handful much more consistently now.

And off the ball I don't need him to be Dom, but he isn't even contributing by forcing a CB into the side of the field they are set on or anything now. I just think it would be helpful if from time to time you could set a full press because he'd be a part of it.

He's still playing with Young now, as well as Darmian, Sanchez, Kolarov and Vidal. Meanwhile, I believe that Smalling is considered to be one of the best defenders in Italy.

It's a bum league.

He’s the anti Drogba, never delivers when it matters.

If I recall this was the game when he was first seen as Drogba’s successor, August 2013 UEFA Super Cup final, and he misses the decisive pen in the shoot out

Compare him to the man he was meant to replace.

Lukaku has a better touch than he is given credit for (for quite a while I was among those who never rated that side to him, unfairly so), but his positional sense is shocking and last night wasn’t the first time he was in no-mans land. He’s also carrying far too much weight (muscle) which makes it harder for him to shift that big frame of his quickly into the right positions. A bulky, awkward big lump, he’s the Frank Bruno of football. He looks knackered carrying it around, and even early in games he sweats bucketloads as a result. A change in diet and acquiring a footballers physique should have been a priority years ago. Quick and nimble he ain’t, and in today’s game that’s a big handicap.

Ultimately he would be outside the top 10 strikers in the game today, and outside the top 30 forwards if we include wide players like Cristiano, Salah, Mane, Sterling etc. I’d rank the likes of Vardy much higher than him. Vardy over five yards could skin a defender, a defender could easily live with Lukaku over similar distance. Vardy is also a constant menace, Lukaku goes long spells where he is anonymous (again, unlike Drogba).

I also think Lukaku hinders the others around him as there’s not much creativity from him. He never seems to compliment his teammates. He might score you 20 goals, but at the cost of the overall tally of the attack as another forward might score less but the team scores more. Drogba scored plenty, but he was also huge in bringing others into play (he’s a major reason 4-5-1 became fashionable). Benzema is probably the best creative forward in the world, also scores plenty but is a major reason Cristiano was a goal machine there. Big Rom falls way short of the top forwards in the game.

Think when the pressure is dialled up he goes awol too.

He's done it throughout his career so it's no surprise. The Lukaku who pounded Chelsea into submission in the FA Cup is the exception and not the norm. Had he had done that in the semi we would have (should have) broken our trophy drought. Very good finisher when the team is going forward against a team that is notch below.

I know it's a bit of a petty point to add in, but it's quite funny that this happened in the season where they finished 10th, behind Mark Hughes's Stoke City.

Some of this is blatantly untrue imo. One bit is the creativity part. I mean he isn't Henry but for a center forward he does more than enough. In fact yesterday (which from your post here I'd gather you didn't watch) he put a pretty much perfect ball into Lautaro who screwed up his touch.

The Vardy being far better part is a bit wild too but I don't really feel like typing that one out.

Was always a highlights player at Everton and balanced out hiding in the big games by steamrolling crap teams, scoring 2 in the last ten when we were already a goal to the good (at least, that's what I tell myself).

Was chatting about this with a mate the other day after watching England Belgium where he looked completely unplayable (admittedly was just switching between Maguire and Rice and loving it). Mad to think he is just 27 and reaching his peak. I think we'll see him cause serious damage to teams in the next three years.

Still got a bum first touch. Plenty of hilarious youtube compilations of his time at United

Vardy is far better.
