He’s the anti Drogba, never delivers when it matters.
If I recall this was the game when he was first seen as Drogba’s successor, August 2013 UEFA Super Cup final, and he misses the decisive pen in the shoot out

Compare him to the man he was meant to replace.

Lukaku has a better touch than he is given credit for (for quite a while I was among those who never rated that side to him, unfairly so), but his positional sense is shocking and last night wasn’t the first time he was in no-mans land. He’s also carrying far too much weight (muscle) which makes it harder for him to shift that big frame of his quickly into the right positions. A bulky, awkward big lump, he’s the Frank Bruno of football. He looks knackered carrying it around, and even early in games he sweats bucketloads as a result. A change in diet and acquiring a footballers physique should have been a priority years ago. Quick and nimble he ain’t, and in today’s game that’s a big handicap.
Ultimately he would be outside the top 10 strikers in the game today, and outside the top 30 forwards if we include wide players like Cristiano, Salah, Mane, Sterling etc. I’d rank the likes of Vardy much higher than him. Vardy over five yards could skin a defender, a defender could easily live with Lukaku over similar distance. Vardy is also a constant menace, Lukaku goes long spells where he is anonymous (again, unlike Drogba).
I also think Lukaku hinders the others around him as there’s not much creativity from him. He never seems to compliment his teammates. He might score you 20 goals, but at the cost of the overall tally of the attack as another forward might score less but the team scores more. Drogba scored plenty, but he was also huge in bringing others into play (he’s a major reason 4-5-1 became fashionable). Benzema is probably the best creative forward in the world, also scores plenty but is a major reason Cristiano was a goal machine there. Big Rom falls way short of the top forwards in the game.
