How many goals did he score a season at 17 compared to when he was at his prime at Utd? I think you will find he got better after he left

So because he scored more goals at United he was better? What a ridiculous and simplistic way to argue a point.

He had the best international tournament of his career in 2004.... By far. England would have probably won it if he stayed fit. He was an Everton player at that time. He stood out on a pitch that featured zidane and Henry. Both declared him one of the best players in the world after the game.

So I’m your simplistic view a striker isn’t judged on how many goals they score? Is your name Steve Bruce!

I would personally argue that it is only one, it is definitely an important one but it is all relative. You should be judging a player on all the attributes it takes to be a footballer, a winger is not just judged on how many assists but how many opportunities do they make, how many goals, how they track back, how versatile they are. It is the same as a striker, are they a team player (link up play), who they score against, when they score, etc.

Ok ..... So you are saying Kevin Davies, roque Santa Cruz, adebuyor, Robbie Keane, John Carew were better players than Rooney in 2008???

really?
All I’m saying is Rooney was potentially world class from a young age and he started to fulfil some of this when he scored about 10 goals in the season 17/18 for Everton. However he consistently did that for Utd and if I remember rightly he scored about 15 goals plus a season on at least two occasions and had lots of assists. I remember one season when he was on fire in the Champions League. I’m simply saying he hit his peak for me when he was at Utd not at 17 years old.

Disagree. He became a player in a system at man United,. At 17 his raw fearless play on the pitch was rarely seen in his later career, took players on, broke through the lines.

Same with Giggs, far better player when younger.

Each to their own, I remember feeling frustrated on many occasions watching Rooney for Everton, he often tried to do to much but perhaps that was because he was surrounded by players who weren’t on his level. His frustration was clear to see at times and I think as he got over he became more rounded (mentally not physically!)

Rooney lost his pace quickly though. Rather than burst into space with agressive running, his game became foot on the ball, look up and Hollywood pass
