Lukaku

Not convinced he's a £20m striker now, and we're paying the money now.

As I said, happy we're signing him, but don't want to overpay given his obvious flaws and the fact his parent club doesn't favour him. We should be in a position of strength to negotiate down.

20M is nothing these days though. Borini was moving for 14M last week. Its only a lot of money to us. For most other clubs its not. The fee is about right.

People look to much at his flaws. His finishing is top notch.

Which part of Wales you from man? Come on, the Wirral lids have been onto me disowning you as one of their own. So it's Wales yo.

Anyway, back to Lukaku.

Watch this fella Chico lid, he'll be out in his barn with a few heads from the Sons of Glyndwr, drinking Wrexham lager, saying "tidy" every 10 seconds, and plotting the demise of yer ma's* caravan** on the Robin Hood Camp.

Given it's us signing him and not anyone else then it's pretty relevant that it is a lot of money for us, isn't it?

Around £20m, fine, but would be disappointed if it cost much more, as it's money that could have went on a punt on the likes of Gibson, McGeady etc. to add squad depth. I just want us to buy a quality player, but do so whilst it being good value and not overpaying.

Nope, but I'd think it was £3.5m overpriced. If we sign him whatever the price, fair enough, but say it was £23.5m, that's £3.5m that could have went towards another player like Besic.

It's not exactly small change for us.

To be fair to Uncle Bill, he does a decent job with regards prices, most of the time.

And yet in his first proper prem season on loan at WBA he scored more than all but 5 players, trouncing several 20mil+ strikers on the way.
In his second for us, he didn't score as many being overtaken by Aguero, Dzeko and Rooney who he scored more than the season before, but still finished above plenty of massive names such as Van Persie.
The potential the he emboldened is simply to be unbelievable, he's already proven himself top quality.

Well he's got to fund that other operating cost column somehow eh?

Tubey, unless roms legs fall off, he's worth at least £15 million for the foreseeable. Paying £5 million over the odds is a calculated gamble. If he doesn't improve, we COULD still get a hefty wedge for him. If he improves, then KERRCHING! It's a no brainer mate.

who could we realistically sign that will get us 20 goals in a season (i reckon he'll get 20 if he comes here). seems that we will be getting him as well as a fair few others, yes a few are youngsters, i would like to see us buy a winger in his prime rather than another youngster, but if we get lukaku, we've filled the main pressing areas which are natural goalscorer, DM and backup for McCarthy.

main striker was the only first XI position where we needed that top class quality which should come over the top of quantity imo and hopefully we will be doing that. 1 extra £3-4M along with a weaker and cheaper striker wouldn't have got us very far imo

He was poor in general in the second half of the season, has the style of game that could be very "streaky" and could be found out. He's by no means the finished article and by no means a risk free signing.

I don't think we could sign a 20 goal a season striker for less - but I'm not convinced Lukaku is a 20 goal a season striker. I've only seen him play well in counter attacking sides (WBA and us in the transition phase under Martinez) where we could get balls to his feet so he can run at people, or put him in behind a defence in the channels.

None of us know what he's going to be like consistently as a focal point where he's required to put in the work rate and bring other players into play when pushing an opposition back.

On balance, worth the gamble, but not worth £25m+.
