Lukaku

It's odd, but the more mobile Naismith in the forward position in our system put Lukaku to shame a few times in 2014. And that's my concern - does Lukaku fit the system consistently, in the way you'd expect from a £20m+ striker (which, in reality, is like a £40m+ signing for our rivals).

Your putting to much focus on the system he would need to fit into, personally I dont think we played to his strengths a lot of the time last season and I would suggest we changed our system to suit.

But thats another discussion for another time.

Do one Boyo.

Classic. From the textbook.

LOL. Goals is the one thing he does guarantee mate.

But he doesn't - it's far too premature to say so. 15 games for Chelsea without a goal in a possession based system (albeit as a sub mostly), and only proven in counter attacking sides. He hasn't proven he can score goals at European level, or at international level, and he hasn't proven his versatility in a team system.

If he guaranteed 20 goals a season, Mourinho wouldn't be letting him go.

If true, that'd be fine. £18m up front with whatever else in installments or ideally performance based would do me.

And I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case either. The lad still has a lot to prove to justify £20m+ of anyones money.

I think he will do it, he is a winner. He is bloody minded with the dedication to back it up.

how come you know about football now ?

We played perfectly to his strengths in 2013 when we were getting used to the possession based stuff and needed the outball runner in the channels - and he dominated because of it. But we did not in 2014 when confidence oozed and teams began to fear us and sit back, and his performances suffered.

And is Martinez going to adopt his tactics for him? Maybe... can't see it though. I'd expect Martinez to pressure Lukaku to adapt his game before that happened.

Given it's us signing him and not anyone else then it's pretty relevant that it is a lot of money for us, isn't it?

Around £20m, fine, but would be disappointed if it cost much more, as it's money that could have went on a punt on the likes of Gibson, McGeady etc. to add squad depth. I just want us to buy a quality player, but do so whilst it being good value and not overpaying.

The problem is that when it comes to top quality players, prices tend to skyrocket. If we have a look at the market we'll see that most highly gifted strikers have already been bought or are not for sale. I honestly couldn't come up with many potential targets who I'd fancy getting. If we could get Rom for 20 million, I think that's a fair price for such a young lad with an already extremely impressive CV who isn't injury prone. I'd even be willing to pay more, but then again, I have no insight into the club's finances, I can only hope that the management is willing to break the bank for this lad. World class is written all over him if you ask me and we saw how good he's done here, we can't make a mistake with him. He has got the necessary flair and skills this team badly needs, but still has large room for improvement. Yes, it's a lot of money we're talking about, but if you ask me, he could open the entrance gate to that magical top four we all dream of, so he'd be an investment worth making.

I just think if your gonna spend 20m on a player you should do everything you can to make the purchase work.

LOL, it's not premature at all, the lad is a goalscorer. He might need to improve other areas of his game, and you know that, so why you're now arguing he might not get goals regularly is both hilarious and confusing.

Because he's been a goalscorer in a certain type of system.

Watch that video, watch his goals for Belgium. Notice how they're in behind a defence. Watch his Everton goals, particularly the one for Arsenal, and you'll notice it's when he gets ball to feet and has a chance to run at defenders holding a high line, exploiting space.

Then watch pretty much any game in 2014 where a side drops deep and Everton are trying to break them down and note the difference.

He is not a guaranteed goalscorer - nobody other than exactly three players in world football are. There's a good chance he'll get us goals if we either set up to his strengths or he continues to develop, but that's an entirely different argument.

If he was a guaranteed 20 goal a season player, I maintain that Mourinho would not be letting him go, or that he'd be going for Suarez money.

All I can say is that I'd rather pay £18m now with £10m in installments based on goals, European goals, cup wins etc. than £23m up front. I'd happily pay the extra £5m premium if he come as good as everyone seems to think he definitely will be.
