Because he's been a goalscorer in a certain type of system.

Watch that video, watch his goals for Belgium. Notice how they're in behind a defence. Watch his Everton goals, particularly the one for Arsenal, and you'll notice it's when he gets ball to feet and has a chance to run at defenders holding a high line, exploiting space.

Then watch pretty much any game in 2014 where a side drops deep and Everton are trying to break them down and note the difference.

He is not a guaranteed goalscorer - nobody other than exactly three players in world football are. There's a good chance he'll get us goals if we either set up to his strengths or he continues to develop, but that's an entirely different argument.

If he was a guaranteed 20 goal a season player, I maintain that Mourinho would not be letting him go, or that he'd be going for Suarez money.

hmm for a 21 year old? chelsea paid £18m for him at 16, suarez comanded only a slightly larger fee when he was coming to his prime.

barca overpaid desperately for suarez this summer, but it was after a record breaking season in his prime, nobody would pay estimated £75m for a 21 year old. now is the time to pounce because his price will be at the lowest it will be until his 30's, it's great we seem to be pouncing now imo.

No it's not. Jeffers scored a few goals, he never did anything spectacular. 40 goals in his entire career - Rom has already scored 74.

As for the MJ bit, well what's up with him mate?

Johnson proves the point - age is no indication of anything. Barkley could suddenly get addicted to crack, for example. To say bringing up Johnson to prove that point is irrelevant as he gained weight and has a mental illness is crass and missing the point - which was it can happen to anyone.

Jeffers was very good. Not sure if you actually watched him at the time but he was an instinctive goalscorer with tremendous movement and looked to have the world at his feet. Much like Lukaku. To say he was "never any good" is just insane; all that happened is that his game fell apart when he left Everton.

£20million for Lukaku is a steal, let's be honest here.. although Lukaku does seem to drift in and out of games he still manages to get his name on the scoresheet. He scored 17 for WBA and 15 for us, that's a pretty impressive record for any striker in the premier league never mind one who is only 21 years old. If we want to get anywhere we have to be willing to dig deep and take a risk every now and again.

Chelsea had the resources to do it, so his fee is distorted.

And we don't know the fee will be his lowest possible value until his 30s - there's no way of knowing that. I hope it is, obviously, as we're signing him I reckon, and I don't want the lad to fail, but people are assuming too much will happen as an inevitability rather than a possibility.

Don't you ever wonder though... if that IS the case, why aren't a few of the European giants "stealing" him for that price? And why is Mourinho prepared to let him go so "cheap" and replace him with a 36 year old?

Strongly disagree and please watch them again please with exception to the Arsenal goal was a result of really effective tactics.

Physical presence and his ability to slot and that good enough for me, his goal product is why all we really want him/need him. Moments like the Arsenal goals are wonderful bonuses

Okay, we should never give anybody a big contract then, because anybody can get a mental illness. LOL.

I watched Franny alright. Never rated him mate, he was a one trick pony.

The Arsenal goal saw him plugged on Monreal and used effectively to run the ball, which is his strength. Yes, really effective tactics - completely different to how we used him in 2014 centrally otherwise. And that's my point - I don't need to watch them again, I know that he was generally poor as I watched the games he played in and said it at the time.

That's not the point. I was countering your point that someone decent at aged 20 is guaranteed to get better in time. They aren't.
