Because he's been a goalscorer in a certain type of system.

Watch that video, watch his goals for Belgium. Notice how they're in behind a defence. Watch his Everton goals, particularly the one for Arsenal, and you'll notice it's when he gets ball to feet and has a chance to run at defenders holding a high line, exploiting space.

Then watch pretty much any game in 2014 where a side drops deep and Everton are trying to break them down and note the difference.

He is not a guaranteed goalscorer - nobody other than exactly three players in world football are. There's a good chance he'll get us goals if we either set up to his strengths or he continues to develop, but that's an entirely different argument.

If he was a guaranteed 20 goal a season player, I maintain that Mourinho would not be letting him go, or that he'd be going for Suarez money.

His record suggests he scores a goal every two games. His age suggests he'll get better.

Sorry mate, but you're talking out of your arse here.

All I can say is that I'd rather pay £18m now with £10m in installments based on goals, European goals, cup wins etc. than £23m up front. I'd happily pay the extra £5m premium if he come as good as everyone seems to think he definitely will be.

I would rather pay 5m and let them throw in Eden Hazard, but dont suppose anybody can 2nd guess the rent boys.

His record where mate? At Barcelona? Real Madrid? World Cups?

As that would indicate a "guaranteed goalscorer".

No - he's done it at West Brom and Everton, in very defined systems.

As for his age suggesting he'll automatically get better, I'll throw a few names at you - Michael Branch, Francis Jeffers, Michael Johnson, Michael Owen...

Christ, "Michael" is an unlucky name for a footballer...

He was poor in general in the second half of the season, has the style of game that could be very "streaky" and could be found out. He's by no means the finished article and by no means a risk free signing.

I don't think we could sign a 20 goal a season striker for less - but I'm not convinced Lukaku is a 20 goal a season striker. I've only seen him play well in counter attacking sides (WBA and us in the transition phase under Martinez) where we could get balls to his feet so he can run at people, or put him in behind a defence in the channels.

None of us know what he's going to be like consistently as a focal point where he's required to put in the work rate and bring other players into play when pushing an opposition back.

On balance, worth the gamble, but not worth £25m+.

i'm not sure we'd go north of £25m, but he won't be that.

think he's proved throughout his career that his strike rate has been phenomenal. last season was his first full season as a professional, he was playing vitually every minute for us because of kone and traore's injuries, no wonder he looked a bit leggy in the second half and continued that into the WC

Interesting take on things, according to this report Mourinho doesn't want to sell to a current Champions League team to avoid a Courtois situation

Edit: thinking about it, Luiz has just gone to a Champions League team. Mirror nonsense

That and Wolfsburg aren't in the champions league... which makes the fact that someone is getting paid to write that daylight robbery

Could be that, or it could be that our system changed and he suffered, and at the World Cup the top defenders simply sat off him and let him do nothing when Belgium attacked.

Not sure it's worth paying £25m approx. straight cash to find out which it was really!

All I'm saying is we should be in a position of strength here. The top clubs aren't interested (and I feel that I know why watching him play), and he's had a poor World Cup and isn't wanted by his parent club.

LOL, if he'd done it at Real or Barca, we would have no hope and bob hope of signing him. He'd cost at least £50 million.

Lol, 2 of those players were never any good in the first place, one is a fat depressed alcoholic, and the other, ironically was bought by Real Madrid and had a very good career until his mid to late twenties.

To say Jeffers wasn't good in the first place is just rewriting history. The bold bit is just stupid.

And as for the first sentence - exactly.

No it's not. Jeffers scored a few goals, he never did anything spectacular. 40 goals in his entire career - Rom has already scored 74.

As for the MJ bit, well what's up with him mate?
