Offer him the contract and it's give him a deadline.

Unfortunately top class talent is high maintenance. You have to treat them like princesses. Get them birthday cakes. If you give them deadlines they'll tell you to do one. You need to woo them and make them feel special.

People generally tend to improve when they gain more experience doing something, Lukaku will pretty much be guaranteed first team football here where he'll be able to make mistakes and learn from them to become a better footballer.

Great - you're still wrong. It suggests nothing other than the fact he's 21 and isn't likely to retire any time soon.

Potential is separate from age.

I think you're being a bit silly here. Most players do improve with age. There are some notable exceptions but most player tend to peak 26-29 depending on the type of player they are. Look at Drogba's record. Not that impressive early on. 12 goals in 64 games in Ligue 2 for Le Mans aged 20-23. Then 3 in 12 for a Belgian team aged 24. Then finally breaks through and scores 17 in 34 for Belgian team and Marseille move for him. Even his first couple of season for Chelsea were fairly average. 10 in 26 and 12 in 29. I remember Hansen don't a piece on him on MOTD slating him. The rest is history. Diego Costa has also been a slow developer.

At the moment, Everton can only sign players that are flawed in some way. If they weren't flawed then they would cost north of £30m and would only go to one of the big boys. If we go down the "if he's so good why are Chelsea selling him" then we would never buy any players because all of our signings have essentially been rejected by the richer clubs as not being good enough for them. Our transfer strategy is to buy good but flawed players and improve them so that they become £30m players. That's the only way we can compete. Lukaku is the most proven goal scorer and the best prospect in terms of potential to improve that we can afford. He has had two successful seasons in the league, knows our players and manager already and there is therefore very little risk of us not getting at least our money back in the future. It's a no brainer.

I didn't compare them in any way other than to say they were both young once, and that their futures were/are equally unpredictable, as is the case with any young footballer.

Actually, signing more experienced players is just as risky. Loads of big money moves that seemed like dead certs haven't worked out. Shevchenco, Veron etc. Younger players have more potential to improve than older players and also have more playing years left in front of them.

did you get vaulted so badly or something that you have lost all imagination, dream a little

Tubey, you're coming across as being against the transfer, but I suspect your just warning caution... Not quite sure..
£20m yes or no

?

No... I'm excited by the transfer, I think he's the best we can get for under £20m, but I'm not going to go mad and forget my reservations about him in certain aspects. That's all it is. Do I have to be 100% "Lukaku is going to be the greatest striker the world has ever seen" because he's signing to belong here?

I'm fairly sure I could vault myself raving about the guy in this very thread.

Exactly that.

£20m, yes. £18m with addons, no brainer. Anything north of £20m, I'd see it as a fairly poor deal but I'd live with it as he's a good player who we'd always get money back on, but it stops us being flexible in improving other areas of the squad with the cash saved.

Don't see the point of arguing the toss here. We've lacked a good finisher for years & signing tired, half crocked, 30+ strikers is only a short term gain. Signing Lukaku shows clear intent on behalf of the club & even if he doesn't set the world on fire, I like the direction the club & Roberto are taking us.
