I don't see why these things have to be black and white? I guess. Of course we bought him for his goals. And I'd never suggest we should buy players for anything beyond what they contribute on the pitch. My 'investment' statement was more aimed at the idea of, "Hey we just bought this young, marketable, clever, charismatic goal scorer! Maybe we can market him to sell some extra merchandise."I look at it like this - if we've bought him, we've bought him for his goals.
Players can't be seen as investments. What if we bought a midfielder for £20m and his knees wanted to be like Norman Whitesides'? Then you have zero value.
Players should be bought on what they can bring to the team, with the target of trophies and CL. That will then yield return through TV cash.
I feel Lukaku (and all players) should be seen as a squad addition rather than a business pitch.
Just read this from NBC Sports. Seems like he doesn't watch much Everton

"Lukaku’s strength is what’s key to to the way Everton play. Long balls from full backs Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines often find their way into Lukaku’s feet and the Belgian is so adept at holding it up and bringing Everton’s other attackers into play. Without Lukaku using his brute strength to hold off one or even two PL defenders, the likes of Ross Barkley, Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith and even full backs Coleman and Baines wouldn’t be able to surge forward and join in attacks."
Couldn't be any different from the way I see Everton playing or indeed Lukaku.
Yeah the balls I remember from Baines were mainly behind the defender for him to run on to and bully his way passed the defender. If by long balls he means precise 50 yard daisy cutter fired in by Baines then yes, that does occasionally happen.
How much would we have paid for him this time last season?... Like perma..
Lol.. Ffs Kenwright... No foresightIts a good point, we actually increased his transfer fee the last season, FFS Everton, but I suppose we can offset it a little with the 50/50 wages, but hes on more money now as well.
OH FFS
We are ACTUAL Leeds.
They probably still would have given £20mil+ price. There was no money like that readily available and in your first season as Everton manager you wouldn't want a potential 20Mil mistake if things didn't work out. So I think the way things panned out was for the best in everyone's interests.....Its a good point, we actually increased his transfer fee the last season, FFS Everton, but I suppose we can offset it a little with the 50/50 wages, but hes on more money now as well.

There was no way he would have signed for us at that stage anyway... Just would love to know Chelsea's previous evaluation of him..They probably still would have given £20mil+ price. Surely that's for the next transfer window thread?
I think the thread for selling all of our players started yesterday. Right after lukaku held up his shirt.
