Good centre forwards do play with their backs to goal, they control balls and hold up play to bring other attacking players in

The ball bounces off this guy and the attack breaks down and we end up back defending or stretched by a counter attack

The guy is useless and his finishing is to be blunt garbage when actually on goal
I agree about your remarks regarding necessities of a good forward, and also the current situation regarding Rom and his back to goal.

However, he certainly isn't a garbage finisher. The problem is that he isn't getting into the correct positions for us to utilise his abilities.

Partly he is to blame for that, while it is also partly the fault of how we are setting up. We aren't helping him and he isn't helping himself.

That's what is most frustrating as we've seen what is capable of, yet we/he seem incapable of actually utilising that potential properly this season.

Sorry I must remember to serve my time before I can engage in internet verbals with stand up guys like yourself.

Do me a favour mods. Really do ban my IP. Genuine.
Christ ...

Its just a forum lad. Calm down. you actually want to have your username banned ? After a draw against Sunderland... lord !

I think we need to get Big Dunc to slap him a few times across the face.

To get the beast fired up. Instead of playing like a wet lettuce.

His play back to goal wasn't awful today. He linked up well with Eto'o who should have scored and with other players on the wings.

The problem arises when we allow them to get so many players in and around the box. The only passes that get played into him are short and all he can do is pass it back.

He doesn't seem to be able to back into defenders like Anichebe or roll them like a Suarez/Aguero and he isn't as good as Giroud at little flicks which is what Martinez wants.

However he's learning and definitely showing improvement.

Can't blame a forward when he doesn't get service but should have had two today. Need to start taking his chances but we need to go a bit easy on him.

He didn't value himself at £28M and I'm sure he'd loved to be slotting every week, us getting on his back won't help.

Give it time and I'm sure it'll come. Once Mirallas is back after internationals with Barkley, the little interplay will start again. At the moment there's too many players trying to do the same thing. Kev will bring the width back and create the spaces for him to run into. IMO, with the 4-3-2-1 formation is has to be Rom or Eto'o, they don't work together in that formation, they get in each others spaces and make it harder.

Either keep that 4-3-2-1 and play:

Howard
Coleman Jagielka Distin Baines
McCarthy Besic
Mirallas Barkley Naismith
Lukaku

Or change the formation to have two centre forwards and play them both. Naismith isn't a winger but I think he does a decent job there and I don't think it's accommodating as Barkley, Naisy and Kev can all keep swapping and I think that's more dangerous than having McGeady on the pitch - although I've no idea where Pienaar or Oviedo are as if they were fit I'd play a proper winger on the wing..

Bottom line is, Roberto needs to play Lukaku OR Eto'o.

Playing them both is making it even harder and making the team unbalanced.

Throw them both on at the end of the game when we're going for it, but starting them both in our formation doesn't work. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that.

Chelsea don't start Costa and Remy in their 4-2-3-1 and the RS won't start with Balotelli and Sturridge in their 4-2-3-1.

It's a system for one out and out striker.
