Shut up and panic already.

It's like the chicken/egg conundrum. A youngster needs to be given a first team chance to gain experience and progress as a footballer. However, managers decide to play those already with experience ahead of youngsters. So how do youngsters get a chance. In my opinion, instead of loaning our prospects to Cheltenham Town and Colchester United like Garbutt was, loan them to the top flight in other countries. Surely there are opportunities there for British players that can both provide experience and give our club insight as to their ability to perform in the Premier League.

Maybe Hibbert is the better option for this particular game, given West Hams form, our missing players and Hibberts vast experience over Garbutts inexperience?
If so, I question Martinez's decision to prioritize this game over the long term. I know football is very much a win now proposition, but our goals need to be for the longer term in my opinion.

But you want to introduce youngsters when you're in a position of relative strength. We really haven't kicked on this season when we've been given every opportunity to do so. If we weren't in the middle of a seemingly never ending injury crisis, Martinez would be more inclined I would think.
I want him to play on Saturday, but if he doesn't it's not going to be he end of his Everton career.

In the manager's defence, not only does he have his 1st choice left back injured, but he has a right back at less than 100%, a 3rd choice CB, and, to top it all off, 3 out of our 4 CMs are facing fitness tests. That should not preclude Garbutt from playing. However, I'm sure the "back 6" being threadbare of 1st choice options has the manager very concerned.

Couldn't disagree more.

Risk losing three points just so one youngster gets 90 minutes? How much is that going to improve his development?

You could just as easily say putting him in against Downing who, on current form at least, is one of the top wingers in the league, could knock his confidence.

Man, I really need to stop replying, I seem like Garbutt's brother or something.

I see where Dougie is coming from, as well as yourself. And possibly Martinez. I just think we need to look at this with the eye for the long game. Hibbert isn't the future. Maybe Garbutt isn't either, but Hibbert definitely isn't.

It's fine playing him at RB - that's his position and Browning is somewhere between that and CB. I just don't see any value in playing Hibbert there when we have Garbutt fit and available and 21. I don't bang on about Kenny getting in ahead of Hibbert - he's clearly not ready, but if Garbutt isn't ready now, then he won't be before his contract is up, and I think we'll see him walk away.

The only value for us playing Hibbert is possibly a 3 point swing. Huge possibility, as Hibbo will be out of position, but a possibility. 3 points this year should be less important to us than what Garbutt and our youth can help us to in the next decade.

And once again - I'm not saying he's ready. I'm saying if he's not, then we shouldn't expect to see him play for Everton, and it's a shame because he seemed to be highly rated.

As badly as not being picked over out of position Tony Hibbert would knock his confidence?

Out of contract in the summer.

I may be more inclined to agree if we had him tied down for a few more years.

Yes, definitely.

I personally think he's good enough and should play ahead of Hibbert, but football is all about the next game. You pick your best team every week if possible IMO. No giving kids a game for the sake of it, unless it's against Burnley.

Better play a blinder, amke loads of tackes, score a hat trick, cure a young man of polio and turn some water into win Luke, or you'll be dismissed by some for life

It's your own fault for being a promising young player at Everton. You better be amazing or you'll prove you're just not up to it

Think that's the way of Moyes and the like.

You have to get the kids time on the pitch or they will never be the best team unless they're wunderkind or you're completely out of options.

Football is about the next game because fans and chairmen will turn on a manager that overlooks the next game while building for the future. I suspect this is an area that we can exploit by building a young team, letting them play together and learn together and work towards the goal in a few years time. While the kids need steady older heads, we have them in Jags, Distin, Barry and the like.

I do not know Luke Garbutt, and you could be right that having a poor game against Downing would be a greater knock to his confidence than not being picked. I do know that I would be more upset to not be given the chance over a player nearing the end of his career out of position. That would absolutely make my head drop and make me think I'm not good enough.

As for the now vs later argument, I think that's an interesting topic in its own right.
