I guess this is where I really kind of disagree.

You have to trust him. He's not a 17 year old in a new place that's going to get terribly abused if he has a poor game. He's 21, been in our reserves for quite a while behind Baines and Oviedo, and finally has a chance to play a proper debut and the manager picks Hibbert?

I'd fume. I'd fume so properly hard if I were in his situation.

It belies a lack of trust.

Like I said he's got the responsibility to make sure Garbutt progresses at the right time, if he feels the lad won't fare well from getting a chasing of some fast direct player and is better served waiting his time for another opportunity that's his call and the reason he's gets paid the big money.

It wouldn't be a lack of trust, it would be a responsible management if he felt Garbutt wouldn't react well if it didn't go to plan.

They've got that lad from French football on the right wing who's fast, direct and been on fire since he signed (can't remember his name!) I can see Hibbert being deployed to shackle him as he's been a big player for them. It may be a case of not wanting Garbutt to face someone so on form on his home debut and possibly take a big confidence knock. I'd prefer a left back to come in but Martinez has a responsibility to help manage Garbutts long term progress and it would be understandable and not such a slur on the lad if Hibbert does get the nod.
Do you mean Sakho? Both he and Downing will be facing late fitness tests

I might agree with you if Hibbert were playing in his position of Rb or perhaps even CB but Hibbert has barely played LB, it is as much of an unknown playing him there as Garbutt without the benefit of giving a young lad we presumably want to keep an opportunity in his best position. Garbutt is in his last year of contract and has Baines and Oviedo (rightly) ahead of him, if he doesn't play not he's not going to get many other chances to progress here.

I understand that. And I get that it's possible Garbutt doesn't have the proper temperment for it. But honestly, there is literally no better time to play the kid. He's out of contract next summer, so he's unlikely to stick around if he feels he's not going to get in the first team. Oviedo and Baines are out. We've been poor already, so if he has a poor game, it's likely to be overlooked for us to continue to slate Osman, Lukaku, Martinez, Ross, whoever else we're slating this week.

Truthfully, if he doesn't play West Ham (and isn't injured/exhausted/something going on behind the scenes) I would be surprised if he ever did play for Everton.

That's the lad yeah, he's been flying so it would be a big blow for them and big bonus for us if he misses out.

Hibberts very experienced and has proved his defensive versatility in the past so it wouldn't exactly be a big stretch for him, in fact it's the sort of role in the right he excels at.

Given Oviedos recovery I wouldn't rule this out as Garbutts one and only opportunity this season.

If he doesn't stick around or get offered a new contract it will because he's not up to scratch, not because he's not faced West Ham.

Or he is up to scratch, Martinez plays Hibbo in front of him to help his development (or because he doesn't trust him), he leaves on a free next summer to get more playing time, and he develops into a damn fine LB that we wish we still had.

That's what Martinez gets paid to judge, and it wouldn't be the end of the world seeing as we've got the leagues best leftback tied down for the next four years and probably the leagues best understudy leftback.

Have you considered he might not be to the required standard for a top premiership team?

Of course I have.

I've also considered that Tony Hibbert out of position is not required standard for a top premiership team. I've said that if he doesn't, then he likely never will.

If Hibbert is really a better choice than Garbutt, then we should sell him in January.

Hibbert has never really struck me a being particularly skilful with one foot let alone two feet. There are plenty of talented footballer who can't switch over from one side to the other - Cahill never plays as the left of a CB pair for instance.

But this is less about Hibbert than it is about Garbutt, he's not going to get many chances anyway and at least has quite a lot of senior football to draw upon admittedly at league 1/2 level. The circumstances are not perfectly ideal for him to come in because of our injuries elsewhere in the team but that is about the only downside as long as he is himself performing well in training.

We're at home, we're unbeaten in a run of games so the rest of the defensive team isn't in the collective funk it was earlier in the season, he has an experienced player in Distin next to him to help him out and although we'd dearly like to win against West Ham a defeat wouldn't have the same psychological blow a loss in the derby would have. Tbh given the likely makeshift midfield we are likely to put out and West Ham's form I'll be glad of any points in this game regardless of who plays at LB.

Maybe Hibbert is the better option for this particular game, given West Hams form, our missing players and Hibberts vast experience over Garbutts inexperience?
