Yes I feel RM has messed this up, not enough game time Baines could have played in midfield he was spouting last season how Baines could covert to a midfielder , and we have lacked a decent left sided atttacker all season!
Garbutt did nothing wrong when asked to play - RM spouts about youth yet all I see is an ageing playing squad that Spurs game on the last day was frankly embarrassing we were so slow , and totally outplayed!

....have to disagree. I think this one has been done to death but in my opinion you pick your best players in their best positions. Baines is a left back. Baines is our best left back so you don't move him to keep somebody happy. Indeed, I suspect Garbutt will have made his mind up a long time ago to move, even had he played more last season I fear it wouldn't have mattered.

lol true

but regardless, if he is successful it will be seen as a mistake on our part

some would have him behind oviedo (including the manager perhaps), and i think thats where he might make look some foolish

i would have loved for us to keep garbutt but realistically he would/will be looking at around 2 seasons before he would become a starting XI regular if his progression continued, reason for that is by then Baines will be reaching that shelf life were majority of FBs start to lose there legs and can no longer compete regularly at the highest level.

On a side note the bit i highlighted i think some people forget just how good Oviedo was before his horrific injury. I won't be the only one who was thinking it at the time but during that spell when Baines was injured Oviedo looked miles better than baines had all that 1st half of the season. It was like watching the Baines we were used to under moyes and gave us a much better balance down the left to compliment what coleman was doing on the other side of the pitch.

Garbutt only managed to get ahead of Oviedo in the pecking order because of that injury, had Oviedo not been injured in all likelyhood we probably wouldn't have even seen Garbutt (or atleast very little) up to this point.

Garbutt getting game time may have been a mind changer to want to stay at the club, Baines may have flourished midfield name me some players RM has played there with key players injured, who proved to be successful?
It's been a mess Bainsey has had to mark a winger and the overlapping full back hence he has barely got forwards as he did last year!
KM, and AM , plus SP were missed greatly imo!

....you might well be right but I reckon Garbutt made up his mind when offered a contract 18 months ago. Others played in midfield ahead of Baines because he's our LB. I thought he was chasing shadows when used there against Newcastle, he certainly wouldn't get a game there in normal circumstances and fans would soon complain if he did and it didn't work.

The fact that he hasnt already signed a pre-contract by now like Cleverley & Ings suggests that he's not intent on leaving but is weighing up his options, so theres still a good chance he will stay.

The lad is just trying to make a living. He isn't a Blue. Life isn't a fairy tale. This whole wining about the kid makes us look small time.

who does it make us look smalltime to ? You think other fans actually care or are even aware that some people on this forum moaning about us not retaining a young prospect ?

.....have to say I thought he'd have sorted a club and contract months ago, perhaps his demands are high or he's hoping a real good tournament with U21s might increase the number of suiters and enable him to squeeze more monies from his new club.

Its academic who's reading or not.

Grown men moaning at a laddy just trying to do the best for himself. That's a bit silly.

The lad has talent but we've seemingly ignore him. So maybe the management don't rate him that highly. Either way I wish him all the best.

Yes I agree , but no sense of adventure from RM - you have to try more than one game Ovideo seems when fit to fill the left midfield position, square pegs in round holes - in the past blues players have have become greats not in their natural positions, or just been versatile - eg Stones came to us as a full back etc

Agree which is why i think its not a cert that he's off, he's obviously putting a lot of thought into it which is all you can expect him to do. If we can sort out a loan to a prem team such as Bournemouth, Norwich or WBA etc then surely the prospect of returning here and taking the LB position is better than signing for one of these teams and being stuck there should they go down. Or signing for Liverpool (if rumours are to be believed) and being in the same position as he is here but with a younger LB infront of him.

He is for me 3rd choice LB for me, the reason I say that because when Oviedo covered for Baines he looked as close to Baines we will ever get.
Garbutt is without doubt a fantastic talent and potentially a future England LB, but in Baines we have. LB with 2 or 3 seasons left him him so he will have a wait on his hands.
So sad if he goes, the best option I believe for all is he goes on loan and makes his mistakes and learns his trade at a lesser club. I think Bournemouth would be a great team to go for, plus a manager who will help him in his overall play.

Think he's overtaken Oviedo.

Obviously focus on the present but always an eye to the future - if Garbutt is as good as people hope or think, you want to keep him on your squad. Or if he's easily replaceable (let me know how many good LBs are out there that we can easily replace) then let him go.
