I was dubious about Hibbert getting the start over him but, to be fair to Martinez, I though he did a very professional job (especially considering he had an unfit/out of form Mirallas and Barkley covering in front of him for some of the game) and a better job than I would have expected Garbutt to do (you don't want to put an isolated inexperienced player out there like Coleman in Lisbon).

Be interesting to see who starts on Thursday and Sunday.

Hibbo was bog average out of position nose bleed when going over the half way line let too many crosses go in from the left back position - not his fault as he was well out of position if any player like Garbutt see hibbo chosen ahead of him the he has the right to be annoyed!

You ever noticed how many crosses Coleman lets in? I'd say he's worse than Hibbert was today and I'm a big fan of him. Tbh, I think it's a failing of modern defending, but both of them do a good job in cutting out runs before they get into crossing positions.

Choosing that useless Hibbert over Garbutt today definitely cost us the.... oh, wait.
My issue prior to the game wasn't so much the perfromance that Hibbert would put in (thought Hibbo did a decent job) but with the message it sent to our young players in general and Garbutt in particular.

Lad has done everything we possibly could have asked him to do - two years out on loan where he did well, then recall and sat on the bench with only a brief cameo for six months. Then an excellent preseason plus good performances in England U21 games. And yet on the rare occasion both Baines/Oviedo out and we are facing a weakened team at Goodison, Hibbert get picked in front of him.

Exactly spot on my point exactly 100% agree with you! We won v a poor west ham team!

Agree with all you said. Despite Hibbert's solid defensive performance today, he should not be playing left back. Very negative selection from the manager.

Garbutt could have got laced everywhere today and you'd have people saying the opposite.

Hibbert played well.

He could have had a blinder too like.

That's the thing though, it's in the past, no point dwelling on it, Martinez got it right today and got the 3 points, the team winning games is a priority over individual performances right now, and while I'd like to see Garbutt play more I'm happy with today's result.

To be fair like i said in the hibbo thread, wouldve been a tough one for Garbutt to deal with all that today, the strong arming and all the antics, was always going to be and was hectic

Will see in mid week whether martinez thought the same and instead plays him in what will be a bit more calmer enviroment if baines or oviedo arent ready

That's what I'm saying m9.

Martinez got it right today. Three points in the bag. Within striking distance of fourth place on points. I short time ago people were on here complaining about relegation, then it was complaining about a mid-table position. Now we're winning and steadily climbing the table and the complaining seems to be getting worse. I don't think anyone would say we are near the level of last year but give yourselves a break, take 10 minutes and enjoy the win.
