Feel a bit sorry for Garbutt today as both Baines and Oviedo are out and still he could not get a start but I have to say Martinez got it right today. We won even we gave up our left side when attacking.

Tony Hibbert was very good today especially as he was on the wrong side for him.

Yes but if Garbutt is getting splinters on the bench we will never know will we - god they never had a winger in the first half!
Garbutt is an up and coming young left back international = Hibbert who is a bog standard over the hill right back!

Maybe Martinez didn't want Garbutt with his limited experience up against the likes of Andy Carroll and the jarg monsters in the box?

......he might well have made it clear he's running down his contract. I don't know but if that is the case he wont want to go on loan or leave in January. Not a bad time to be a professional footballer, Garbutt holds all the aces.

What's the normal way of blooding youngsters at this level ? Play 'em in cup matches and Europa League.

I've no idea if the talk about Garbutt possibly leaving is true or not, but the fact that Martinez picked Hibbo at left back presumably means that he thought Hibbert was the better option. Given the fact that Hibbert has actually played quite well when deputising for Coleman I can see why. Yes, Garbutt would have given us more going forward, but, as I keep saying, Martinez can do pragmatism while still trying to play football in the style he wants to. Hibbo was the pragamtic choice today.

hmm. thought he played too central and his willingness not to cross the half way line invited jenkinson to pour forward at will - luckily his crosses were utterly woeful - mainly because he's a woeful player. i know hibbert was out of position, but being a full back he should have been okay position wise.
