Not much difference, plus Coleman gained experience in the Championship whereas Garbutt will be gaining experience in the Premier League.

When a player's top flight career lasts for about 13 years it's a massive difference. Besides, Coleman came from Sligo rovers. Garbutt has already been playing at a higher level in the lower divisions of English football.

Also, Coleman was 21 when he went on loan and a couple of months off 22 when he came back.

Because we're a much bigger club than those and he wants to work his way up to being our 1st choice left back? Obviously if he impresses on his loan and then comes back, with Baines being another year older, he may well start to phase Baines out.
Exactly and all the top clubs above us have relatively young LBs playing for them. His best bet long term is with us and his best thing short term is to go on loan.

Why it took so long none of us will know. We probably didn't want to match his wage demands but that has now been offset by a long contract.

Yes it means that we will be paying more short term but it also means we have either a) more negotiating power if another club comes in for him b) we don't have to upgrade his pay as early potentially offsetting the more money now.

So then why are you even quoting me.

It's quite simple.

Your original post appeared to be suggesting that this was totally different than Coleman's situation, when quite frankly it's not. It's not exactly the same, but they're both at a similar age, both international class, both future first choice full backs at Everton, and both currently have Everton full backs blocking their path - Coleman had Hibbert, Garbutt has Baines. Both are going to go out on loan and get valuable first team experience, rather than bench warm and be bit part players at Everton.

What's the problem?

Garbutt will be aged 22 and playing first team football as a left back on loan at a Premier League club.

You'll be hard-pushed to find a younger Premier League first choice left back in the country.

He'll be getting valuable experience at a high level at a relatively young age.
