he's got to be on pennies

he's made 5 first team appearances for us in the prem in 9 years

thats almost half an appearance every year

You don’t get paid per appearance, though, bonuses aside. We gave him a relatively massive £25k pw a couple of years back when he was about to become a free agent.

U’s boss Karl Robinson said: “He is a very good player and I am flattered if I’m honest that he sees Oxford as the club to help him take his career forward.

I was a little bit shocked really and want to thank both Luke and his agent for the way they have looked at this and seen it as an opportunity to play regular football and put football ahead of the financial considerations.

“That doesn’t always happen these days and has been refreshing.

“I know Luke spoke to Ryan Ledson who loved his time here, and Oxford have also helped John Lundstram and Jonjoe Kenny in recent years so Everton know he is coming to a club where we do things the right way.”

Based on what?

Based on Garbutt being fine at left back when he last got a chance in the first team, and he also looked good in some youth games last season as well. I think he would have come in, stopped the bleeding in that position and would have developed some form from there

He has the talent as he's shown in the past, but football is all about confidence and form. You could be talented but if things don't line up then you might struggle to show it

Agree with you on the confidence and form thing Mikey and that if things dont allign then the chance can be missed. I honestly felt that was what happened with Walsh in that his injuries always came at the wrong time and he got jumped ahead of in the queue.

In terms of Garbutt though I think the lad needs a permanent move away. The chance for him has gone and I think a fresh start is what he needs. I think Robinson and Oxford could be a good fit for him and hopefully he does well. Robinson said he was astounded that Garbutt would even consider going there so at least it sounds like he wants to actually play rather than doing a Rodwell and playing Fifa for his £25k weekly wage. I imagine we are probably still paying half his wage at least but again at least its some saving and a chance for Garbutt to earn himself a deal elsewhere.
