Hart is a top top keeper and I'm not arsed who disagrees. But I thought it was very clever today after the game that Koeman came out and confirmed Stekkers is the number one. That tells me that's he's really made an impression on Koeman, way more than he thought and secondly I think we were in for Hart but now he's thinking "how would I convince Hart to come if I can't now assure him he's number one".

He's shown a lot of qualities already but I don't want to big him up too much. More than happy that after every game if this thread only gets 5-10 pages longer, that means he's doing something right.

So far so good with Stek.

He gives me confidence.

I'm not to sure where I sit with him as our first choice keeper for the season. He has done really well so far and I don't care who you are, if you play really well I want you to be in the Everton line up.

Is three games enough to think he's a top class player all on a sudden though? With all due respect he's never been anything more than an average keeper over his career so it's hard to see him just become a top keeper. However in terms of goalkeepers he's probably entering his peak so maybe he can take a big step, if he plays like he has so far this season we've got a class keeper on his hands, it's just a big if.

Stek deserves the right to compete for our number 1 this year. But the reality is that he's been around a while now and has never been rated as more than an average keeper at best. We really need to get another keeper in that will push Stek and take over if/when he falters. I'd love for it to be a young player with big potential but those guys can be really expensive and hard to pry loose.

For this season spend the money elsewhere. Every keeper makes the odd gaffe, I'm sure our current one will...but he's convinced me he's good enough to help this team move forward. To move to the next level we'll need to replace him...but that's further down the line.
Stek looks confident, happy and at home with us and the crowd have taken to him...and more importantly, the defence trust him.

Average keepers get to World Cup finals and concede 6 in the whole tournament, right?

Let's stop pretending he was never good. He's our number 1 this season so suck it up boys. We're not blowing our top wage and a huge fee on a keeper so just stop looking for negatives in his play and see how much better he has been in 3 games compared to Tim "glued to his line" Howard and Joel "not great with crosses" Robles.

No. Just no. He really was awful at Roma. He was very good just before he got there, but all the hype or the difficulty in stepping up to a bigger league or something just ruined him. The only two times they finished out of the European places in Serie A in the last fifteen years were the two years he was their goalkeeper, and he was the biggest reason. Think about it this way -- if he had been playing well for them, would they have shipped him out to Fulham for less money than they paid for him after only two seasons?

I don't want to take anything from what he's done for us so far -- he looks a completely different player (in a limited sample, granted) than he did at Roma. Revisionist history doesn't help anyone, though.

Exactly.

Im in 2 minds with the stek situation at the moment.
On one hand there is one of the best goalkeepers in the league availible, so why not go out and get him.
On the other hand the form of stek could allow us to go and buy a goalie with plenty of potential (timo horn for example), give him time to bed in and put no pressure on him to perform straight away

third option mate, right atm he is looking one of the best goalkeepers in the league frankly, before last season no one would have said that Schmeichal would be good enough for a team going for the title - yet he did and was a key part to winning it for them by having a great season.

First three games - Stek has made arguably one mistake - going down under pressure a bit too easy to get a foul - which he didn't get, the rest of that game and the following one - no repeat of that mistake and he started commanding his box and coming for anything close - punching or taking them and getting people out his way, thats what you really want to see from a keeper.

Remember when Van der saar signed for United and a lot of people thought he was just gonna be a backup until they signed someone younger and better and he ended up making that position his own for about 6-7 seasons as he took his chance, could be a repeat of that here if we are very lucky.

Maybe a combo of the manager and the top keeping coach we brouight in from Holland has helped and maybe it was just a case of right club at the right time for him - either way I'm slowly getting out of the jitters anytime the opposiiton put a ball in the box or have even a half chance in a game - which is a good sign ;)

...I don't suppose you could ask any more of the lad other than coming in and looking very competent and solid. He's certainly made critical saves to this point.

One that he came for a punched about 60y into the stands yesterday made me a happy bunny mate, got as big a roar from the crowd as the winning goal as well ;)

Neither does making up history.

In his first season they were infact terrible and finished 7th, the season before they finished 6th and in his 2nd season they also finished 6th, they infact only improved once they signed THE STROOOOOOOOOOOOOT.

But nobodys denying he was awful for Roma, judge him playing for us, he commands his area and has already saved us points.

In the Stickle we trust.
