100% agree, especially re standard chartered - for me there are two key issues that I really question
1) the manipulation & brainwashing of fans to defend the in defendable online
2) Betting companies. We will look back on this period of advertising and sponsorship with horrific regret at the damage done
other than that I accept the commercial realities of immoral banks, questionable owners etc. Unfortunately, it is what it is
On both
1) This is often done subtly though isn't it? Nobody connected with the person will say "defend me for x,y,z". They will probably have a friend at government who will ask them for something, they will then spread positives to a certain editor, who will then instruct certain journalists to write certain articles which influence certain fans.
I see similar with things like Standard Chartered. It will not be done explicitly. But actually just allowing your name to be stuck across a shirt of a famous football team (or Vodaphone/AIG with United) does the job for you. It doesn't have to be explicit and it rarely is.
2) Yes I was going to get into betting companies, but felt the post was too long already. But yes there's no doubt they are softening their image via football. No doubt at all. It's all about normalising the idea of gambling and making it seem cuddly and fun (which ironically is what Trump was doing posing for selfies and honoury shirts from the Boston Red Sox owner).
I oppose it. And while of course there are degree of severity, I would hope everyone could say it could all be grouped into the "wrong" category.
