The majority of midfielders drop deep and collect the ball from the back four. Carrick, Diarra, Scholes, Deco, Essien, Gerrard, Alonso, Fabregas etc. It doesn't matter what type of midfielder you are, every midfielder should do it.

He isn't the only one. Castillo does it far more, Osman also does it. If Pienaar or Arteta played in the middle they'd do it.

I don't see the Roy Keane comparison at all to be honest and Keane was more defensive than he was box to box. His strengths where in his tackling, energy and agression. Keane played as the more defensive midfielder in a 4-4-2 alongside Scholes, Fellaini for us has played the more attacking role.[/quote]

Sorry mate your compleatley wrong on that score! How can you say in the same post that scholes comes and collects the ball form the defence but keane was a def midfileder worng he was box to box, i suppose viera was a dm too. I think your finding it hard to get out of the mindset of AM and DM midlieders dont have t obe one or the other, to many years watching 4-5-1 maybe. You mention some of Keanes attributes correctly, but there was far more to his game then that everything be it attacking or defending began with keane he controlled both. Trunst me i saw him play more then most!

I don't see what your getting at to be honest.

Keane was a box to box midfielder, he could do a bit of both. I have no doubts about that but he was stronger defensively than he was going forward. It was his job to win the ball back, he was the more defensive minded of the midfield two.

I'm not saying he wasn't good going forward because he was but he made a name for himself because of his tackling and protection of Utd's back four. That was definatly his strong point, It's not like Paul Scholes could do it.

I've seen him enough to have see what type of player he was.

This is going to be a legendry thread to be honest.
