Ok, let me keep it simple about Fernandes.

Do I like him? Yes.

Should we keep? Yes.

Will he be the best in the world? Not a chance.

Is he a star? In his dreams, he might.

Can he become a star? I believe so.

Is there better players in Portugal? I can think of some other players that I prefer.

Do I think that there isn't better fish at the sea? I believe we can buy better, but he would always be a good addition to our squad.

Toxteth, can you name any Portuguese star player that left one of big three in Portugal for a smaller (or for a club that doesn't even gets european football) club placed in a better league?

Let me think of

Bosingwa (Chelsea)
Ferreira (Chelsea)
Carvalho (Chelsea)
Pepe (R Madrid)
Deco (Barcelona)
Ronaldo (Man U)
Simao (Barcelona and Atl. Madrid - this last move was about money)
Miguel (Valencia - except from this last season they've always placed a challenge for CL)

All of them went to clubs with higher goals but not all of them are rated as stars.

Honestly I can only think of one player rated to be amongst the best that left for a smaller club...Rui Costa when he left for Fiorentina when there was Barça in the move.

But Fernandes never came close to be as well regarded as Rui Costa. No matter what you may think, Fernandes was a business fallen from the skies to Benfica. The lad wanted more money and Benfica ended up getting 18M euros and getting rid of a potential problem.

He never was the kind of God you seem to think he was. He's good, but not that good.

Talking about Benfica, there's a greek guy that would fit the bill for us: Katsouranis. Is cheap 10M euros only.

Who's said he's a star. I certainly didn't.

I'm realistic in my opinion of Fernandes. He's a good young talent who needs nurturing. He's got the talent to be one of the best player at Everton which is very possible in my opinion.

I know there are better players in Portugal than Fernandes. I've said before both Moutinho and possibly Veloso are better than him. The fact that he didn't make the full international squad also proves this.

All I'm arguing is I don't believe every player that wants to move on to better themselves is a greedy [Poor language removed]. I just doesn't work like that. Ajax fans told me Pienaar had a bad attitude whereas Rangers fans told me Arteta was a shithouse and a money grabber.

Fact is the players mentioned moved on to better themselves. Thats my opinion anyway yet by others there labled greedy. Its all about opinions.

I'm getting sentimental...How do you position yourself on Rooney?:D

I didn't want him to leave but realistically he had to. We where awful at the time and where holding back a world class talent. He moved on to better himself and he has done.

I hate him because he disrespects us. He shows no class with us but at the end of the day I don't hold a grudge against him for leaving. We improved after his departure and he got to fulfill his ambitions.

Toxteth, you said Manny left for a stronger league. This statement made me think...how many english clubs would come down here and run away with the championship? I can think of 4 who could do it.

But this season I've seen 2 portuguese sides outside the big three to pose a real challenge to Bayern Munich. I've seen a relegated club (Paços de Ferreira) play as equals to AZ Alkmaar.

I've seen Boavista getting a point at Anfield in a past CL. I've the Rshite playing Boavista at Portugal with their utmost respect.

I've seen Sporting play as equals to ManUtd at Lisbon and getting one nil up and getting a rightful goal to be disallowed, which would make it 2-0 for the portuguese at old Trafford. I saw porto playing very well against chelski and falling due to a goalkeeper error.

So, changing Benfica for Portsmouth still messes with my concept of bettering yourself.

Cause Portsmouth would have no real chance of winning the portuguese league, of that I'm sure.

Portsmouth is nowhere near as good as Benfica.

The Stadium Light v Fratton Park, Champions League v UEFA Cup, Great Honours List (sorry Sotnas) v FA Cup.

The only reason you would do that move would be for money.

Portsmouth play in a better League with a higher quality of player. No disrespect to the Portuguese League as I think its excellent but at the moment it isn't at the standard of the English. There is definatly more competition and that is what attracts players.

Big clubs from smaller Leagues lose players. Ask Ajax fans. There one of the biggest clubs in the world, have one the the best acadamies in the world yet there players are continually leaving the likes likes of Germany, England, Italy and Spain.

Individual games mean nothing really. I've seen Bolton pretty much match Sporting last season with there second team out yet I'm the first to admit Sporting are a better team.

Fernandes said himself in an interview for Everton that if Benfica where in England he would never have left. He left because he wanted to play in the best League in Europe at the moment.

The Premier League v The Portuguese League is all I have to say really.

The Premier League is a much more attractive league at the moment. The top players play in Italy, Spain and England. Thats the way it is.

Portsmouth don't pay big wages either so I don't see how its greedy.

By that same token: Hull City or Stoke v Sporting or Porto?

Its not about the league, and if it is about the league then its about the money for the player.

Oh and regarding their wage structure, see: Campbell, Sol.

Well, Bolton played direct ball and that always causes problems to portuguese sides. The first match in england was a hard one. The second leg was more of control and not taking risks.

I'd say money attracts players, not competition necessarly. And money is something that runs freely in the english clubs accounts. Honestly I think most of the clubs don't know what to do with so much money, considering the wages and the crazy prices paid for crap players.

Did you know Fernandes was turned down by sporting, because he only gained portuguese citizenship (he was born in Portugal but his parents are from angola, and portuguese law of citizenship was far too complicated at the time) when he was 16 or 17, and therefore Sporting didn't have a place for more than one foreign player? So he went to Benfica...

He's a childhood friend to Nani and Vaz Te from bolton...
