2019/20 Marcel Brands

Why did we need to offer Gueye a bigger contract? He'd agreed to a contract extension on better terms a year previously to secure him here until 2022. Why would the club feel the need - everytime another club showed interest in him - to keep on renegotiating Gueye's contract? Once PSG came calling, we werwe in a perfect position to rebuff them. But we didn't because the DoF didn't want to retain Gueye, despite the manager's wishes.

Why did Brands do that? Maybe he was under pressure to show that he could actually do the selling side of his job and wanted a sale.

To try and keep the player happy and performing. As in anything in life, something can turn your head. If his heart was set on leaving and the only way of changing his mind was through a bigger, bumper contract, then it was best to sell.

Look at Zaha at Palace as an example.
Yes you can make the player honour a contract. But they never perform at that consistent, high level expected.

...after we got years out of him and loads of goals...and he had run down his contract.

No comparison.

Lukaku: 3 seasons as an official Everton player, played really well, mouthed off on international duty constantly about leaving, didn't show up in the big games, left with 2 years to go on his deal to join a potential future PL rival.

Gana: 3 seasons as an Everton player, played really well, never mouthed off, played even better after his dream move got rejected, left with 3 years to go on his deal to join his boyhood club.

Yeh, no comparison...

Man United and Liverpool get the most out of their players before selling.

Did United get the most out of Ronaldo? 80moll for a player who then spent another decade as the best in the world. Liverpool and Suarez, Alonso, Sterling Mascherano?

You normally sell players upwards precisely because you haven’t got the most out of them yet and that’s why top clubs will pay a large fee for them.

We did well with Gueye because regardless of what Silva wanted or how important he was to the team, players over 30 who base their game on pace aggression and covering distance will start to slow down. We got 30 million for an asset that in a season or two will be largely worthless. That may have allowed us to buy assets who in a season or two will be worth far more.

Don't use facts and logic with davek mate. It aggravates him.

Lukaku had 18 months left on his contract...Gueye over 3 years.
