Which player are you talking about Dave?

Brands stood down like Utd had to when Ronaldo demanded to move to Madrid, like Liverpool did when Coutinho demanded to go to Barcelona, Chelsea and Hazard to Madrid, Arsenal losing Nasri and Adebayor to City and then Van Persie to Utd. If those clubs who are in the Champions League can't stop their best players from moving on how can you expect us to?

This situation of players forcing through moves isn't new. Stones, Lukaku, and Barkley have done it to us before Brands got here. None of the clubs above us in the table have been able to stop it happening to their players either so why should Brands be expected to?

The contract doesn't mean a player has to play to the same level if they're denied a move they want. A professional probably wouldn't drop their performances if they're denied a move but if you feel the club is holding you back from moving on with your career how loyal and happy do you think they're going to be playing their footy here?

Those days are over now.

There’s a handful of clubs in Europe who don’t have to sell players. Madrid Barca Bayern City. Anyone else will always be looking at another club they could go to to have greater success. But some Everton fans fume when we sell players for huge money who clearly want to leave. Bizarre.

You know as well as anyone Dave the players have the power. The first time PSG came knocking he could have downed tools but to his credit he played even better. And as for Lukaku how many come and get me interviews did he need to give?
No, they dont.

He signed a contract. Everton had the power.

At least another season could have been demanded of him. At least that.

Is there an instance where someone who is under contract for that length of time would hold the power instead of the club?
If the club in question were desperate for the cash, yes. That happened before with, for example, Arteta. Kenwright needed the cash to pay debt interest.

it’s not the 80’s Dave; it’s very very very unlikely a club wins in these situations

stand down, you’ve lost. Marcel has won it for the good guys
A stable club financially can tell any other club where to get off. And they can also make sure that any club that continues to press their case is hammered for it by the authorities.

So why do clubs who don't need the money ever sell players they want to stay?
They do, but it'll be on their terms: with a decent fee for a well used player which they can reinvest. Gueye doesn't fit that bill. He was key for us and we just got him figured out and how to use him.

The manager was desperate to keep him. That says it all.

The manager was desperate to keep him also because he was the only player able to consistently perform under his tactics and he wanted to keep his job.

So it's not so much he was sold that's the problem for you, it's the price and replacement that's the issue?

No, it's also the timing. Itls ok getting a good price and replacing, but they then have to bed in. We had that for Gueye and we were set fair for another two seasons at least.

He could have been our Kante.

Should have gone big for Ndidi before selling him really, he would have been an ideal replacement.
