People don’t seem to understand the partnership in approach to transfers. I’m convinced that Brands sets the guidelines (monetary, intended age profile of the squad, balance in positions etc.) then the manager makes his shortlist of who he wants. Some managers may ask for a list of players that fit a certain profile ‘get me a defensive midfielder who can press’ in which case the scouting probably have a list to hand. In other cases they may say ‘I want Allan’, ‘I want Richarlison’ and if it it fits the guidelines (or the guidelines can be flexed to accommodate) then that’s all fine.
I’m convinced that Brands would have stopped some of the transfer mistakes we made (or nearly made) in the past. Koeman probably wouldn’t have been allowed to buy loads of number 10s, I’m not even sure he’d have been indulged with 50 mill on a player with no resale value potentially coming off his peak. There was rumours of us bidding 40 mill for Giroud that summer, I’m sure Brands would have snapped the purse shut. We probably wouldn’t have been in a situation of having no left back to cover Baines and of giving out massive wages to Sandro etc. He probably would have driven a far harder bargain for all those fees we paid.
Since he’s come in we’ve generally bought younger players in positions we’ve needed them and for decent prices. The majority of players have been better than the ones they replaced (although some are still to prove their full value). Brands may not be perfect but give me him controlling what is put on the pitch any day over any combination of Steve Walsh, Koeman, Allardyce, Moshiri, Kenwright.
