2019/20 Marcel Brands

Brands is apparently a clown because he doesn’t pick the managers. But then somehow he’s responsible for their signings, but not the good ones, only the bad ones.

People have already labelled Dourcoure as a Brands signing but the other two as Ancelotti’s. Do people really reckon Carlo Ancelotti said ‘I want x in midfield’ and Brands just rode over him and said ‘you’ll play Doucoure and Iwobi whether you’re like it or not’.

"What do you mean you want Allan Mr Carlo? I already bought the Fabian Delph last Summer".

People don’t seem to understand the partnership in approach to transfers. I’m convinced that Brands sets the guidelines (monetary, intended age profile of the squad, balance in positions etc.) then the manager makes his shortlist of who he wants. Some managers may ask for a list of players that fit a certain profile ‘get me a defensive midfielder who can press’ in which case the scouting probably have a list to hand. In other cases they may say ‘I want Allan’, ‘I want Richarlison’ and if it it fits the guidelines (or the guidelines can be flexed to accommodate) then that’s all fine.

I’m convinced that Brands would have stopped some of the transfer mistakes we made (or nearly made) in the past. Koeman probably wouldn’t have been allowed to buy loads of number 10s, I’m not even sure he’d have been indulged with 50 mill on a player with no resale value potentially coming off his peak. There was rumours of us bidding 40 mill for Giroud that summer, I’m sure Brands would have snapped the purse shut. We probably wouldn’t have been in a situation of having no left back to cover Baines and of giving out massive wages to Sandro etc. He probably would have driven a far harder bargain for all those fees we paid.

Since he’s come in we’ve generally bought younger players in positions we’ve needed them and for decent prices. The majority of players have been better than the ones they replaced (although some are still to prove their full value). Brands may not be perfect but give me him controlling what is put on the pitch any day over any combination of Steve Walsh, Koeman, Allardyce, Moshiri, Kenwright.

Agree 100%

Do you think Ancelotti negotiates contracts then?

I’m a bit weary of extreme opinions. I find when people think in absolutes their logic can be too anchored.
It's not extreme to believe James signed for Ancelotti and not for Brands.

We don't though mate. He's a board member. Unfortunately that doesn't fit your agenda though , so you just conveniently ignore it. Those are the facts , unless you can educate me further.
He's an employee contracted until June 2021.

Tick tock.

Excellent post,kind sir.

He deffo did. Ancelotti phoned him twice. Would be a bit daft if a DOF ignored his manager who has inside info on an ex player in favour of some 12 year old from Brazil.

The main point to acknowledge is that the Brands model - of looking through the cast offs of decent clubs for younger players - has been cast aside.

He'll be leaving next summer and I think we;ll see a return to the manager only model of dealing with the playing side. The DoF role will be scrapped as a costly mistake.

Mere details for a bureacrat to sort out.

The hard yards are done in getting a player to believe they should be at Everton and how they will play. Ancelotti has driven the deals through those phases. The rest is just pen and paper stuff.

do you think that signing the three players we have for c£65m is good business?
