A perfunctory task. The creative part of the process was done by Don Carlo.
Davek, Why am I not seeing you in any of our new player threads sharing your opinion, it seems you are saving your opinion for a later date and you very much seem to be sitting on a picket fence... is it incase these signings flop, then you have ammunition for a good few hundred pages.

Our old club secretary role was quite a powerful one. They had a hand in the playing side by tying down players and also involved themselves in the commercial development of the club. So yes, different roles: Dunford had more on his plate than Contract Marcel, that's for sure.

it’s interesting to me that you know how the director of football role at Everton is defined.

given how broad the role is and how much it changes from club to club.

What do you think brand’s responsibilities are? What definition are you working from?

I’m curious as clearly this would impact your appraisal process.

They've changed. First 2 seasons of his contract they were all-encompassing: identifying and agreeing player types with the coach; narrowing down that with names that fitted the style to be adopted; tying them down on contracts. His final season here has narrowed down to the last of those three processes: agreeing terms with players and their agents.

He already admitted a few days ago he doesn’t know what a Director of Football does so don’t bite.

So you believe a director of football role is effectively player recruitment. That’s a fairly narrow definition of the role, no?

And that you believe that in the first two seasons his role was to work *with* the manager on recruitment, rather than have sole responsibility for recruitment?

My point is not that a DoF's role should be narrowly or broadly focussed; it's that there should be no role at all for them. They represent a tier of wasteful bureaucracy.

Ok, I will bite.

Who should organise the scouts?

Baring in mind Carlo has never dealt with that side of things, you want Moshiri dealing with that? Maybe Sasha? Or hell why not Denise?
Or would you rather a real footballing man with 20 years experience in the world of scouting?

Who should negotiate the deals?

I wont wait for an answer.

DBB for both <3

You see, again, you are looking at this from the narrowest perspective.

a football club needs processes and functions to be carried out. The division of labour is important.

nowadays, given that football is a global enterprise, those functions are much broader and complex.

you don’t have one person build a car from scratch, you allow specialism and focus of different discipline. Because a car nowadays is much more complex than it was even 20 years ago and specialism and division of labour is a necessity.

So to say a DoF role is unnecessary while at the same time assuming a fairly narrow definition of the role is naive (or deliberately obtuse).

the fact is we don’t know the inner workings of the club. We don’t know responsibilities or division of labour.

it’s especially ridiculous to assign responsibility to individual acts (like the manager signing a specific player and the DoF signing another one) when we have no idea of how responsibilities are divided.

Who should organise the scouts? The head scout.
Who should negotiate the deals? The club CEO (if she;s not up to it, get shut of her).

You talk about this role as if it were cast in stone. We never had it up until 2 years ago. We did ok bringing in players and managing the academy up until then...in fact, we did better without it.

You need divison of labour of the sort you allude to at Real Madrid or Man United, not Everton.

Brands will leave and he will not be replaced. Be sure of that. It's an experiment that failed, and that's why it's been sidelined this summer.
