You talk about this role as if it were cast in stone. We never had it up until 2 years ago. We did ok bringing in players and managing the academy up until then...in fact, we did better without it.

You need divison of labour of the sort you allude to at Real Madrid or Man United, not Everton.

Brands will leave and he will not be replaced. Be sure of that. It's an experiment that failed, and that's why it's been sidelined this summer.

And this is the thing, you’ve just conceded that division of labour is required at a top level. A level we aspire to be. So you accept that to operate at a top level you need specialism and a better division of labour. Which is the point of having roles such as director of football. A position designed to look at the longer term strategy of a club in an era where manager terms are short.

Yes. But we're miles off that ;point so emplying a DoF right now is superfluous and confusing to ther managers we've had. Koeman and Ancelotti may have worked with DoF before, but at a club like Everton where the calibre of men attracted to it for that role has been weak, they chose to bypass them.
