Rightly or wrongly, the manager (or coach) does get the blame and the sack.
Is that unfair? Maybe.
But Chelsea have had an pretty much an unlimited budget and DoFs who've identified fabulous talent. And the coaches still ****ed it up. So they probably should take the lion's share of the blame.
(I find it eye-popping that Chelsea had De Bruyne and Salah on their books and sold them).

The reality is clubs are much bigger commercial entities now than 20 years ago. The inflation in football transfers outstrips regular inflation by about 10 times in the PL. Without looking to patronise people, but that means on average clubs ar enow 10 times the size of what they were a generation ago.

When you see such a drastic transformation of a business sector it's rare it would operate in the same way. One consequence is that the role of recruitment (where most of the money is spent) is now a specialist role. There is far too much scope for a conflict of interests with a coach and a player to allow them complete control over the process. Allardyce would likely have bombed Lookman had he been given the chance, and possibly cost the club 5/6 million pounds at the lower end and maybe £15 million at the upper end. This is a huge sum of money.

I am not particularly happy to the extent it's gone at many clubs. You see Watford and clubs like that who have seemingly given up on ever having a lot term manager. I think thats too far the other way. Their CEO Duxbury when he talks makes my teeth itch with his arrogance on how he treats managers. The aim should always be for clubs to look to have long term coaches as well as long term DOF figures and not use the DOF as a short cut to allow for a high turnover of coaches.

It works best (for me) at clubs where people get themselves on the same page. It requires a degree of maturity (that I think Koeman lacked a bit). If you look at how Klopp operates at Liverpool he has got the balance right, he has first and final say but he's very willing to work with as opposed to against the people above him and they respect his opinion highly. It's early stages yet but it looks like Silva and Brands seem to be working well together and he has factored in Silva's knowledge of players and his role in working with them into his calculations which is a good thing.

To get Williams, Mirallas, Rooney, Klaassen, Garbutt, Vlasic, Mori and probably Besic, Bolasie and Martina off the books with only Vlasic likely to ever play for us again, and get the likes of Digne, Mina, Bernard, Richarlison through the door on permanent deals and Zouma and Gomes on loans is absolutely remarkable work tbh, all in one pre-season too.

The fella needs to be given a UK passport and then receive a Knighthood for his work.

To me we would be looking to emulate Athletico Madrid and to an extent Monaco. Both have a similar system, but have put into place long term coach alongside the wider system.

Disagree, the position of DOF has to be held at high esteem. Our DOF will be around long after any managers get sack to ensure stability and enable the club to stay on the correct path.

A strong DOF with a good reputation across Europe will have more leeway and better negotiating power when it comes to transfer. I have no problem with Brand’s hogging the limelight if he deserve so. It certainly raise the profile of our club. A powerful DOF will not get influence by agent easily either, perfect example is the relationship of Marcel and Rioala in the Dutch league. It’s well known within the industry that only Marcel is capable of handling him in the entire league.

That's ok, let him build up his profile in the industry across Europe. But at a football club the manager is lost if he's not the one and only wielder of power on the playing side.

I think both @Neiler and myself have underlined that the work done so far seems fine.

The bone of contention is more to do with the way Brands is positioning and presenting himself.

I believe in a strict hierarchy at a club in terms of the playing side: at the top is the manager and then come the players. The DoF (if we have to have one at all) comes after that and just ahead of the other senior first team coaches.

That's the way it has to be. That's because if you have dual control players (who dont need much invitation to swing the lead or down tools) can sniff out any hint of a power struggle and start to play upon it.

In short: thanks for your work this summer Mr Brands, but now you can get back behind your desk and leave the public relations side of the club to Marco Silva.

Most successful English clubs are run on the playing side by the methods devised by one man. Wenger and Ferguson were in complete control of their organisations on the playing side.

You cant run a successful club with a manager in the dugout looking like he's rolling out another man's plan. Not possible. Players sense it and will show no mercy for weakling managers. They respect only strong men.

This is why I hope that'll be the last we hear of Brands for a long time.

He's done his "victory" roll today. Now he needs to STFU again and back off into his office preparing more departures and planning for January. That's his job. That alone.
