You have to buy players according to the coaches system/tactics. Not doing so is a sure fire way to fail. You can't just sign a bunch of guys who don't fit your coaches plans. What are they going to add then? The trick is hiring the right coach in the first place. We've finally done that so now the plan is to get him the right players. Brands isn't the man to do all of that. Simply not good enough.

I’m not sure we actually have a system or tactics do we?

Not 100% sure where I stand on him really, as I think he’s had an unenviable task and been shafted by the previous regime. Suppose the proof then rests in his own signings. Pointless arguing about whether it’s a “Brands signing” or not.

Hits: Digne, Richarlison, Mina, Zouma (loan), Branthwaite, Allan, Rodriguez, Doucoure, Godfrey.

Meh: Iwobi, Sidibe (loan), Nkounkou, Olsen (loan)

Misses: Gomes, Bernard, Virginia, Lossl, Delph, Gbamin, Kean.

A few of the misses can be rationalised, but it’s still far from a flawless record. I’d call it decent, with the window last summer being his first great one for us. Compared to Walsh’s record though, it’s positively stellar and he’s been battling against that absolute tit’s mistakes for the past 2 and a bit years whilst trying to improve the squad. I’d be inclined to keep him for another 2 years on balance.

No DoF has a flawless record; they all have good, meh & bad signings. People glamorise the likes of Monchi without actually checking on some of the crap he’s bought.

How do you think it works? You van buy players that don't fit in the coaches plans. That sounds like stupidity.

I’ve wrote about it a few times like here:

Whilst I do think we need signings that both Carlo and Marcel want there needs to be a very clearly defined long term plan within those signings. Would help a lot if we could decide as a club what type of football we want to play though.

Yeah, it's pretty tedious to be honest. Especially when it comes down to 'this player he bought is dreadful' or 'this player wasnt his signing'.

Read that piece in the Athletic a few weeks ago talking about the manager still being by far the most important person at a club...

Also was looking at Monchi's record with transfers, and at least 50% are failures, yet he is widely considered the best around. It's such a nuanced job they have and certainly isn't something that can be judged over the space of a year or two. The key is long term improvement and success

That just means nobody has wanted our overpaid crap for the last 3 years. Take Sandro for example, how on earth are you going to get someone to take a chance on him but pay him £100+k a week? Nobody. Do you have to keep loaning him out hoping someone covers a portion. Rinse and repeat with others
Nobody’s saying it’s easy, but it’s still a main function of his job. My job isn’t easy either, but if I failed to do certain aspects of it I couldn’t explain it away by saying ‘yeah it’s quite hard actually’.

When I was at uni I took an awful telesales job over the summer. I was rubbish at it and when I got pulled up by the boss I said ‘what do you want me to do, it’s a crap product’, he said something along the lines of ‘of course it’s a crap product, if it wasn’t it’d sell itself and I wouldn’t need to employ people like you’. It’s the same principle here, I can totally see why selling some of these players is very difficult, but we’re paying him a lot of money to find a way to do it.

Have to laugh at how so many people now will blame Brands whenever we lose a football match lol kneejerkers all over the gaff.
It's not really kneejerk though is it? Lots of people expressed concern in October that not replacing Kean or Walcott left us short of options upfront. We look like we're about to let two more attackers leave with no replacements lined up.

Yes, I'm happy for the most part that these players are being moved on but to not even have a loan coming in to give us some options is utterly mental. That was a Championship level bench we had yesterday, which we couldn't even fill with nine players and it included two goalkeepers.

The buy a good player route is the sort of stupidity that Chelsea embark in and even in every era of Chelsea the current coach can ask them for a particular player. I'm not sure what was the difference I was supposed to see I what you wrote.

It's not about getting the manager the players he wants, it's about getting him the players he needs. For the simple fact that coaches simply don't have the time to scout all over the world for footballers.

I don't believe I've ever wrote they have to do this?
