Yes, that flies for three transfer windows - it no longer does for five in my eyes.

At that point you simply haven't done the job. I don't care how bad they are or how well paid they are, to have five chances to do something about it is enough to expect a return better than what he's done.
I think it is obvious that in fact the opposite applies with grossly overpaid/valued players .How you can suggest he should be more able to move them on with the majority of their salary left to pay rather than the last part left is just daft .

If you work for a company that doesn't value you, but they pay double the wages of anyone else who would employ you, would you put up with it for a few years? A lot of people would, and this is the problem Brands is stuck with for the next 18 months.

So you're telling me his inability to move on, say, Mo Besic, a 28 year old current Bosnian international, to no other team in world football for a fee, is acceptable?

We've overpaid a lot of crap yes, but not to the extent it's impossible to get rid of these players - Brands has just made look impossible. He's been applauded in the past for shipping out Schneiderlin/McCarthy, but on the other side of the coin you can't ignore his failings with many others. It's literally his job.

Besic decided he didn't want to leave in the Summer. How do you sell that?

Entirely my point - not enough interest, player decides "meh may as well leave on a Bosman than play in Scotland".

Too many of those instances. Again, Brands has had five transfer windows to sell the likes of Besic and completely failed to do so.

The problem is, the contract he's on just won't be matched by other teams.

Lots of lads slagging Brands. Let's look at the reality of the situation though.
Previous administration buys player A and puts him on £80k a week for 4 years.
At the end of the first season it is obvious to all concerned that he is pretty useless.
Even if he was willing to leave , we are going to lose loads of money on the transfer fee. That's bad enough , but most of these wasters know that they are never going to get another contract elsewhere on anything like the same terms. Therefore they have the luxury of being overpaid for 3 more years , so they are more than happy to sit it out. We literally cannot give them away , as nobody will pay their salaries. If thereafter anyone shows any interest in them , at the end of 3 years , then again they will be able to negotiate better terms than they are entitled to , as they are out of contract and leaving on a free.
How on earth do lads expect Brands to move them on in those circumstances ?. Next we'll be expecting him to turn water into wine.

People have put this argument up a few times. You'll get 2 reactions,One of agreement and another of complete Brands hatred.

He’s been here for three years and the squad still desperately lacks quality. That’s on him.
The players he bought - on him.

However, the legacy mess is so huge, it’s completely overwhelmed any transfer strategy. He didn’t sign Walcott, Bolasie, Siggy, Pickford, Besic, Tosun, Martina, Ramirez, Tarashaj or Niasse. He also got stuck with perma-loan players like Pennington on long contracts.

We‘re finally punting the dead wood, but it was always going to take several years to go through the cycle.

The players remaining are much better, but there are huge gaps. The massive squad has sucked the life out of the club and limited what could be achieved in the market. As did the Academy transfer ban.

I think we have nearly emptied the swamp, and thankfully avoided going bust or getting relegated. It’s only now that the real reconstruction starts with wages freed up there may be room to manoeuvre.

What I see is green shoots, and spring on the horizon.

Surely every- one remembers Bogarts at CFC. Big money signing from Barca but turned out to be crap.

Happy as Larry to receive wages and stay fit, get massages and play for the second team for 4 years.

No way Brands can beat a bloke who wants to honour his contract. Delph has made a career out of this approach and is a millionaire. It annoys fans but its part of big business, which is what the Premier League has become. I, for example, have been surprised how little performance targets affect contracts in football.

And another of people saying that while they fully understand how it works, and that it’s not easy, they still feel it’s possible. Obviously making out like anyone who disagrees must be stupid or have an agenda is an easy way to ‘win’ the argument but it isn’t actually true.

If the player won’t go, there is nothing we can do. It was stupid to give Besic a five and a half year deal. Madness.

The whole situation were in makes me remembe4 how good Moyes was at picking a player.
