2020/21 Marcel Brands

It wasn’t one striker though. The club had Tosun on the books who was unshiftable.
They also have Richarlison and Bernard.

Above all else, midfield and CB / LB cover had to be sorted last summer. Other positions had to wait.

We are still dealing with the legacy of 200-300m of wasted signings.
Marcel the football genius should have known that Tosun wasn't good enough.

When was the last time we played a team off the park?

I'll prefix this by saying I'm not claiming we haven't played well in games this season. But go back and you'll find the vast majority of our wins are through good organisation and some good finishing. (Chances created/xG table makes for grim reading for stats fans out there.)

I genuinely can not remember a single game this season where we've started on the front foot, been on top and comfortably seen out the win. Yes I don't expect us to batter teams every other week (especially not at the moment) but surely with the apparent quality in our team we would have had a few comfortable wins at some point. Hell, other so-called poorer teams even have some comfortable wins.

We obviously scored 4 and 5 against Brighton and West Brom at the start of the season, but neither of those games were one sided- we only got on top against West Brom after Gibbs got sent off. The Brighton game was also more back and forth, albeit don't get me wrong we played well.

Since then, the only win we've had by more than 1 goal was bizarrely at Leicester, but that was more of a good tactical plan and excellent defending as opposed to any sort of domination.

Be it in the tactics, the players or moreover our whole mentality, we simply do not have the ability currently to take games by the scruff of the neck. Unfortunately we've gone way too far the other way though and are so passive it's unreal.

Because there's more to just a squad being better on paper to performing better?

Like we're higher up currently than Spurs but who do you say has the better squad?
Season hasn't finished though. Spurs will be above us in a week or two so thats irrelevant. They've underperformed as well whereas we've been between 8th and 12th for about a decade.

But the point still stands...

Spurs have a better squad than us but are performing worse and lower in the table.

Our squad is better than 2017/18 but may perform worse and finish lower than 8th.

Also fail to see the relevance of a decade of season finishes when we're comparing two specific seasons.

Comparing seasons is important as we are trying to evaluate whether Brands has improved our overall team and the best way to judge improvement is league position and arguably cup performance.

Brands up to now has been a bit like the Curate’s Egg, good in parts. I think we must accept the fact that there is not a cat in hell’s chance that Moshiri will not have a DOF in place. This being the case, it makes sense to keep Brands, as the whole reason, as I understand it, for having a DOF is to provide continuity in the event of managers coming and going, as they inevitably do. So, if we let Brands go, the whole process has to begin again and we are 3 years further away from developing a ‘club identity’ which, ideally, goes right through our teams from the academy to the first team.

Hopefully Brands, at the beginning of his tenure will have sat down with Moshiri and they will have agreed a plan for where and how they see the club developing. If he is offered a new deal and signs it, we can only assume that both parties are pleased with the way this is progressing.

From a personal point of view I don’t think Brands is a clown, nor do I think he is this mythical architect and I still find it difficult to understand the Iwobi signing, 28 million, if that’s what it was, was way too much for a player with a very limited skill set.

I'm sorry, but I can't take anyone seriously who says the squad of 2017/18 was better than now regardless of where we end up finishing..
Its not about the squad being better though. If Brands has succeeded we should be much better and we're not. We are arguably a bit better so hes done at best a 6/10 job. Not an amazing job like some people make out.

Don't know what you're on about, this was a solid XI from 2017/18
