The only reliable way to judge if the squad is better is how it performs.

If this squad finishes no better than the 2017/2018 then what do you have to point to that supports the argument?

The eye test, the quality of said players, not having Niasse up front.

If this squad finishes 9th are you saying then it's a worse squad than 2017/18 and you'd happily swap them?

Hahahaha jesus all hope is lost on you. It's OK to be wrong sometimes, mate.
So its mental to finish that a team who finished 8th 3 seasons ago could finish 12th now? I must have missed all the world class stars at the likes of Palace, Newcastle and Burnley. The league hasn't got considerably better since 2018. You could argue Leicester and West Ham make the top half more competitive.

No way does a team who finished 8th in 2018 get relegated now that is a ridiculous shout.

Are we getting relegated this season???

The eye test counts for naught.

What counts is where we finish at the end of the season. The results the squad earns are the only valid way to judge its quality.

If we finish 9th then this squad has undoubtedly performed worse than the one in 2017/18.

If we finish 9th then we have a worse squad compared to our peers than we did in 17/18. That would be a fact and the eye test can't refute that.

The eye test is fine this year, then we need to see results moving forward. There's been quite a lot of things I've liked this season, especially up until the new year, but then there's been some awful things too.

Our performances have been so up and down it's been hard to understand. We started so well, and have then thrown in some truly dreadful performances, the sort that you'd have been shocked by under someone like Allardyce. I guess that's to be expected this year, but they need to massively reduced.

The big indicator of a good team is how bad you are on a bad day. We are extremely bad when things don't click and that's what has to be improve. The bare minimum level and the standards we set have to get better.

You can have a better squad but still perform worse than another year though I'm not sure why that's hard to understand.

Again, Spurs, better squad than us but performing worse this year.

If you say we have a better squad than Spurs then you're just on a WUM mission.

I agree with you, but I think that probably only applies for one season. I think if we were to finish above Spurs, and do so again next year, then whatever you thought about the squads on paper, you'd have to start to consider that actually maybe we're better than them on the pitch. It's a bit like Leicester, on paper their squad is good but not exactly amazing, but because they've consistently been up there for a while now a lot of their players have suddenly taken a big jump up in people's eyes. At the start of last season loads of people would have argued that our squad was at least as good, if not better than theirs. Now nobody says we have a better squad than them. That's because ultimately it's results that count, and if we don't get results to show that we're better than 8th then it really is hard to argue that the squad has improved in any real sense.

I said they would get relegated. If we finish below 8th this season would you swap our current squad for the one from 2017/18, as it must be better according to you?
I think this team is probably slightly better but we have spent a lot of money and therefore Brands hasn't done a particularly good job.

Just about being a bit better than 2018 isn't my idea of success.

2 of them are long term sicknotes Delph and Gbamin. Allan has been injured a while.

I’d rather have nobody on the bench than Tosun and Bolasie, but not signing another couple of players in January is going to hurt us, considering the squad we have.
With all players fit we have
Pickford
Godfrey Mina Keane Digne
Davies Doucoure Allan
James DCL Ricarlison

A bench to choose from
Olsen ,Holgate, Nkounkou, Delph .Gomes Siggurdson King Gbamin
Bernard ,Coleman ,Iwobi

7 of the first 11 were Brands signings (or at least on his watch )

....still no word on a new contract, so here’s a theory without any inside knowledge or any basic reasoning:

‘Davide Ancelotti is lined up to be Everton manager at the end of his Dad’s tenure. A new young manager will require a DoF he knows, trusts and can lean on. A new DoF suggested by Ancelotti’s is incoming.’

Its a bit of a ridiculous theory now I read it back.
Conspiracy theories do not sit easily with your previous posting history which by and large is educated logical and fact based :)
