Its not about the squad being better though. If Brands has succeeded we should be much better and we're not. We are arguably a bit better so hes done at best a 6/10 job. Not an amazing job like some people make out.

Hogwash. This squad is way better than back then, unfortunately for us, so is a lot of other teams in the division.

A Leicester side that had recently won the league finished below us in that season. People always think the most recent league is the best.

There are some very poor sides this year in the league.

If you're using unique situations that will probably never happen again to make a point, then you're pulling in the wrong direction. I don't understand what's so hard to grasp about our squad being better now than it was then. That XI would be relegated in this season's league.

Then what does it tell you about us?

Why should we automatically be the ones expected to take full advantage of the fact that the likes of Arsenal and Spurs have struggled of late? literally the ONLY consistent team in this league this year has been City and it's easy to see why.

I mean it pretty much was at the time: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/everton-fc/startseite/verein/29?saison_id=2017

Missing Coleman who sucked, Barry who was on the way out then, Bolasie maybe?
Well yeah I suppose it depends what parameters you use, in terms of whether it's the best players available at that moment in time or the best players available from that overall squad. I'd say Baines, Coleman, Jagielka, Vlasic, and Lookman would be obvious improvements to that squad. You'd have to say Funes Mori, Klaasen etc while not being great players for us would make that squad look better on paper than Martina and Garbutt. I was sort of half joking really, but in a couple of years there's a chance we'll be looking back saying Delph, King, Olsen etc god that was grim, and who the hell are Nkounkou, Simms and Virginia.

Well I mean considering only Olsen plays from that list and the others are kids I wouldn't be shocked if anyone said that in 2 years haha.

Not a chance. That squad finishes about 10th-12th. Same as where we will end up.

Yeah that's what I was getting at originally. There's a reason that specific screenshot of the team away at Arsenal did the rounds, because it had all the worst players in it. It wasn't necessarily an accurate reflection of the quality that was in the squad at the time, but it serves a purpose to suggest that it was. Kenny, Nkounkou, Delph, Tosun, King, Virginia etc have all played for the first team this season. Theoretically you could throw all of them in a squad and say see it's no better now. As I said I was just sort of making a throwaway remark about how we've still got rubbish players really, I do appreciate that we have a better squad now than then.

Was it? considering his age and his form at Arsenal it could've been worse like.
He was never first choice at Arsenal, which I think is part of the problem.

At 24, he's still never had a season as a regular starter. He's one of those who will be a young prospect until suddenly everyone realises that he's 30.

That's performance that's not is the squad better. This squad is better than 2017/18 and if you deny that you're a fanny.
The only reliable way to judge if the squad is better is how it performs.

If this squad finishes no better than the 2017/2018 then what do you have to point to that supports the argument?
