2020/21 Marcel Brands

King, Bernard and Lossl were signed for a total of £2m. Lossl was only ever cover and Bernard did play well under Silver. We should also recoup some money for him this summer.

There was widespread clamour to sign Gomes after his loan year. it’s revisionist to think otherwise, but I accept he has not performed this year.

Delph and Iwobi have been failures, there is no hiding that.

Gbamin’ injury problems were not Brands fault. We can’t tell if he is a player or not, but that one is just bad luck.

Kean will turn a profit, so whilst not adding on the pitch this season, he is not a Walsh size disaster.
I think if you’re going to make a big fuss about cutting the wage bill - which we have - then you can’t add big wages to it for no return, no matter what you paid as a fee. Lossl for example was allegedly being paid in the region of £30k a week to be our 3rd keeper, that’s a poor use of resources however you look at it.

Not that whether the fans like it or not should have any bearing whatsoever on whether we sign someone, but I’d say ‘clamour’ was stretching it on Gomes. Plenty of people wanted to sign him, plenty didn’t, most were fairly ambivalent.

I think Brands is taking all the heat and becoming the scapegoat because people don’t want to point the finger at Ancelotti. Brands has done a excellent job in my opinion. And people really don’t know how much his hands could be tied. He’s still got to go and get players that our managers have wanted. And he was also left with a big mess that Koeman left.

Marcel has had 3 years to get rid of the negative deadwood posters on GOT. A near impossible task but that’s what he is paid for. Yes he has bought in a few Colombian positive posters and seems to be improving the attitude of our youthly posters but he really has to up his game this summer. Hoping to hear of lots of free transfers to Newcastle(their natural home) and an influx of Cultured European fans.

Think it's way past time to stop hammering Brands for failing to shift players. If we know they are deadwood, so do other clubs and it comes as no great surprise that they don't want these players either.

They were given stupid wages and stupid contract lengths before Brands joined, we just have to suck it up, take the hit and make sure it doesn't happen again.

No point in the endless argument of who was responsible for signing whom; it's been said they work as a team so let's leave it at that.

This said, we've got to get it right this summer. Pace is good but I want to see hungry players in the positions we need, with some squad depth to prevent the gap when key players are missing. We need to instill a winning attitude throughout the squad.

I accept that the wage bill has to be managed. But Lossl really wasn’t much of a problem. A mistake, maybe, but in the grand scheme of things not dreadful.

Bernard has been a failure on large wages, as has Iwobi.

With regards to Gomes, I think you only have to look back through this site to see the clamour for his signing and the panic when WHU tried to get him. You may not have been bothered, but that was not the majority opinion.

But the problem amigo is that he's added to the deadwood .... Iwobi , Delph and Bernard to name 3.

Do you think that was the case with Gomes mate? I know you've always been quite luke warm, but my feeling was that people really wanted him. There was some talk of a massive fee (well about 25m we ended up paying) which made people nervous but I think there was quite widespread support for the signing at the time.

I was certainly firmly behind the signing. I wasn't all in on him, but I thought we would see more of his dazzling displays as he became more familiar with the club, which hasn't really happened.

This is where I was and a lot of fans were too.
He just hasn’t delivered on the evidence of the first season.

I can’t quote them because the threads closed but go back to his thread from that first season any time after Christmas and you will see pages and pages of different people saying either that we shouldn’t sign him or that they weren’t fussed whether we did or not. It’s also worth pointing out that the forum isn’t the only place that people have opinions. The opinion of the people I go to the game with and sit around was split aswell. Of course plenty of people did want us to sign him - as I’ve already said - but this often repeated myth that the fan base was all desperate for him to sign is just weird.

I do expect to start seeing a more focused transfer policy starting this summer...there was a lot of cleaning up to do that doesn't happen overnight but we should start to see the road straightening. Actually expecting to see more high risk but purpose-built purchases.

Fair enough mate.

I wasn't saying you were wrong, but I remember a lot of the conversations I was having would be to say to people that it's unlikely a top team is gojng to nip in ahead of us and we'd have to pay whatever it took to get him. Anecdotal evidence somewhat, but that was just what I remember. It's interesting others have different recollection.
