Marcel Brands

….I suggested that blaming Brands for our ills in the transfer market masked the real problems in our club. The transfer process is a mess. I had no issues with him leaving but feared things wouldn’t change. I doubt they have.

Its hard to know right at the moment mate. Its where we go from here and whether there is a tangible improvement on recruitment or not. Some of his decisions I think are very questionable and were very undermining for us in terms of player trading. I also felt we were always short in some lines and the squad seemed to always lack depth in certain areas. The business has made huge losses in his time, i think he was poor on player trading - particularly player trading sales, id accept some mitigation in that, but this is largely his squad now and looks as poor asset wise as when he begun. The wage bill also remained stubbornly high.

You are then looking at coherence amongst grades - an overall footballing strategy - a club identity and philosophy - what are Everton about and how do they play as a club up and down the grades - we don't have that and haven't for a long time. So on that score its been poor.

Was there much interference etc - i guess we will see - but the very best are able to manage that, certainly id expect someone on a salary of approx 5 mill to be able to.

Things went downhill for him in summer 2019. The transfer activity was pretty poor with hindsight. Imagine if we'd taken that 35mil spent on Iwobi and bought a CB or CM. We now know that the purchase of Iwobi was not his idea.

Yeah I said this at the time.

Silva had a specific way of playing and for it to work he needed to have players with the right skill sets (most notably a hard working and mobile central midfielder and pace at the back) and we didn’t provide them for him. Silva should have adapted better, but I honestly think if we’d just managed to bring in a couple of players with the right attributes he could have had us on the right track for a couple of years.

Whether that was all on brands or down to interference from above I don’t know but we had an opportunity that summer and we really messed it up.

It also forced Silva to field Gbamin before he was back to full fitness (after Schneiderlin's dumb red card in the opening game) and we all know how that turned out

….that’s all based on the assumption he was a conventional DoF, which he clearly hasn’t been.

I’d criticise him for being too circumspect in being part of the owner and various managers bringing in their own players. The problem at the club is no coherent strategy, individuals working to their own agendas bringing players in. I don’t believe Benitez hadbthe total control his supporters claimed.

The processes within the club need to change, a single Co-ordinated transfer policy with one individual in charge.

The part in Moshiri statement where he credits Kenwright for his skill in dealing with transfers tells me all I need to know about the role Brands played while here

Well no body exactly knows the job spec so it’s easy for either of us to speculate mate. Really you come down on the competency of the man or you blame the club and influences.

Personally I think he’s more culpable, in any management position you have to set boundaries and authority, and hike being able to work as team member with others, but ultimately have an outcome to your purpose. In my opinion he failed in that and even if he was swallowed up by the club, he colluded with that and he would have continued to as it was him who brought it to a head.

He wasn’t value for money in my opinion and he wasn’t that competent. I’d give him credit for being down the age of the squad. But then I think would I play Iwobi in his early 20s or Townsend in his 30s + so even that have a caveat.

I personally don’t think he’s as much a victim of circumstance as I know you do. But that’s ok to have different opinions.
