20 games gone too. 7 wins.

I mention Moyes because I appreciate for what he had done here. He made Everton hard to beat and beat teams we expect to win. In fact, he was kind of faultless in the league given how low his budget was. If the aspiration is to break into the top 6 then the new manager must do better than Moyes. That’s the standard.
He also needs time, like Moyest got.

How do we know?

It's a fair question. We know we are better than last year. There's plenty of statistical evidence, but we are creating MANY more chances, we have been significantly better in possession, and we definitely have some better players. This isn't blind optimism, it's tangible.

It's frustrating that we don't have more points, but as I said before, I don't think some of us remember how BAD we were last year. We were REALLY bad.

We are also 2 points out of 7th, 5 points out of 6th, and we've played almost every one of the big 6 away from home already. We are FINE.

Having played a game more than those clubs. Prior to the Burnley game, we had conceded the same amount of goals and scored the same amount of goals as we had at the same stage last season.

Lies, damned lies and statistics as the old adage goes. My personal opinion is that we’ve not actually improved at all. Not in comparison to the teams around us. We’ve not regressed either, we’ve just maintained the status quo. The real question is, is the perceived improved style of play, sufficient “progress” that it’s okay that we’ve not impressed as we arguably should have?

One of the ways any manager is judged is not just the signings that they make but how they improve the players already in their squad. I have high hopes for the likes of Holgate, Davies, DCL and Lookman and I don’t think any of them have pushed on. I think Walcott, Pickford and Coleman look worse under Silva. Arguably the only notable improvement has been Keane.

I guess it's just what you want: effective or stylish.

Ideally it's stylish AND effective but those managers and those teams are hard to find. We were effective under Sam (for the most part) and under Moyes, but we lambasted the boring football we paid to watch. We're more stylist under RM and Silva but lambast the numerous head-scratching defeats.

A combination would be ideal but then that manager wouldn't be here long.

Stop. We were not effective under Sam. Not at all. We were LUCKY as hell. It wasn't just style, it was results. We'd beat Hudderfield Town 2-0, let they'd have more possession, more shots, etc. Sam had a crap schedule, he got beat by Watford, West Ham, same thing, except we'd get dominated as opposed to unlucky.

This is a MUCH better team than last year, let's not kid ourselves.

We were effective, we finished 8th. You just said yourself it was results.

Results =/= effective

We were crap.

How we finished 8th is beyond me. Just showed what a dreadful league it was.

Not saying this year is much better, but the teams around us probably are. We've improved, but so have West Ham, Watford and Leicester.

And look, they're all massively inconsistent too. Because that's just where we are as a team right now.

At least the issues with us are clear. We create chances, we threaten teams. We just don't put them away. It's frustrating - hugely - because we could easily be 10-11 points better off and given the chances we have created we should be. But it's clear that that's the issue that needs addressing.

It's what we should be aspiring to.. Not to finish 6 or 7 with a few dour wins.
5/6 years ago the rs were a million miles from winning it. Look at them now

Of course. To win trophies. But I just do not see how we can achieve that in particular the league. That will need mega huge investment in the squad with the right people managing the team.

No, I said our results were LUCKY. We were in 8th with a -14 goal differential. Creating opportunities at the same level as relegation teams. Conceding 58 goals.

This year we are tied for 10th. Our table position is virtually the same. Better goal differential, better possession numbers, more chances, actually better defensive numbers or at least even.

Look, if you want to simplistically look at a 20 game sample of match results while ignoring everything else, that's fine, but that's just silly. You'd have to be blind to not see the difference on the pitch. It's night and day.

There more issues than that, but yeah, we had issues in virtually every area last year. Yes, finishing has hurt us this year. A player or two in January could make a BIG difference IMO. I just can't image it will be at CF.

But seriously, I keep saying it, but have we forgotten about last year? We were SOOOOOO terrible.

Again, yes we were crap, but we were effective.

Why is everyone struggling to understand the definition.

I'm not looking at a 20 game sample. I'm just saying this year we're more stylist but we have less points so we're not as effective.

Effective nets Brighton a 1-1 draw with Arsenal, stylist nets Everton a 2-0 defeat vs Arsenal.
