Mark Hughes

The notion that Mark Hughes has been discussed by the Everton hierarchy if the worst happens to Marco Silva is a superb piece of stategic management - because it then makes the idea of turning back to David Moyes in desperation seem like a stroke of genius.

Its not though, just makes me hate kenwright and the board even more

Honestly, I said a few months ago that Brands would never hire Moyes, but now im totally convinced hes next up.

If Silva has been sacked we are in real trouble, even more trouble than we are now.

In that case we would need :

A manager that knows the league
A manager that can grind out results
A manager that can make a team hard to beat
A manager currently out of work

Moyes is ya man sadly.

We got Sam in cos we needed somebody like him, if Silva has gone, we need a Moyes.

Gives us a chance to get to the summer when our options open up vastly.

Give me other names? Ive thought long and hard and Moyes is the obvious choice.

Laurent Blanc fits those criteria. And Arsene Wenger.

Doesn't Jose meet that criteria?

Honestly I think the worst move for our long term prospects would be to fire Silva mid-season. I would rather he signed a 5 year extension than we sacked him. We saw the immense damage a short term manager can do. Grind it out with Marco, the performances are fine, not top 4 level but not relegation either, and reassess where we are in the summer. Trust the man you've brought in to run the whole show to do that and let Brands make the decision and hire the next guy if the decision is to do that.

The alternative is bring in some kind of sit back and counter manager who will almost certainly ruin the confidence and stall the growth of actual footballers like Iwobi, Richarlison, Davies and Kean. It'll also go sideways at some point because we've spent the last 18 months pressing at a rate only matched by City, Spurs and the RS and a sit deep approach will take adjusting too. And ultimately we will either be stuck with a manager who is getting us no where near top 4 or we will have spent 6 months playing a style that won't get us there that the new guy has to erase.

Keep Silva, have faith that the bad luck can't go on all season, and take a look at where we want to go in the summer or reset the clock on what is probably at best a 5 years cycle to begin with. It's a crucial moment.
Perfect!

I wonder if Hughes stock has risen slightly on the basis of Stoke's continued implosion (think he had them at ninth) and Southampton's more recent one? The latter in particular, when Hassenhutl came in and got a tune out of them it didn't reflect well on Hughes who came out looking like a dinosaur.

Problem with Moyes is the same problem that saw caretakers OGS and Dalglish score long term contracts, despite not fitting the previously disclosed plans of their clubs owners. Someone with that level of past association comes in, gets an initial boost from not being Marco Silva, results improve and a tidal wave of relief and emotion together with fear of what could've been gets the board to rip up their plans and wheel out the long contract. Then the new manager boost wears off and the long, expensive realisation that he's not the messiah can begin.

That's why Sam and not Moyes was the name they went for last time. That's why this time they'd presumably prefer a Hughes or Pulis, They are clearly not permanent options so Brands can continue with his long term plan whilst they get on with grinding out the continuation of premier league status.

Still hoping a couple of results can get some confidence in for Deadly December and we can limp through to the summer when there's a greater chance of getting an appointment for the long term.
It is not 'this time'
He has not even bedded in the replacement for DM. Injuries have screwed us plus some abysmal VAR. Not his fault. Stay with it!

I've said it before and i'll say it again... Football evolves, and that means managers need to adapt to change to make everything run smoothly.

On one side, you had Ferguson, Wenger (for most part), and even Hodgson... who have changed their methods continuously to ensure they are ahead of the game... then you have fellas who have a successful method, but when football changes, they can't change with with it....

Mark Hughes, Souness, Moyes, Pardew are all key examples of this.

Hughes was very successful at Blackburn and did very well at Wales and arguably City. But by the time he rocked up at Fulham, he was past it, how he managed to get jobs at Stoke and Southampton... well, it's got to be based on player reputation. Moyes' way worked for us, and he did change, but by the time he left United, and was out the game for a while, he fell behind, tactically poor at Sociedad, West Ham AND Sunderland says it all.

It's a no from me.
