Which position for the marquee signing?

A midfielder than can go both ways, looking at Kante and Drinkwater today made me realise we have 3 players in central positions and these two outrun and do more than our 3 combined, both are a breath of fresh air.

I think the two of them combine incredibly well at Leicester. Would be absolutely made up if we had a midfield that could match that one.

Before we decide which position we would want a marquee signing for, would it be more wise to see who's staying or going out of the present team. I.E if Lukaku gets off we will need a marquee striker.

Centre Mid or Goalkeeper, If Lukaku goes a Striker without a doubt. Ideally We need a couple of 'marquee' signings' to signal our intent.

Like most have said, Manager first and foremost.

Voted based on the assumption that Rom will leave. That would be the biggest gap we need to fill.

There are other gaps too, but as this is about a 'marquee signing' that's the role for me. Assuming we don't lose anyone else then a little more/better cover in most areas would be good, plus a good young keeper behind Joel and someone who can play consistently well on the left.

Working on the assumption as stated the original poster that nobody would leave, hence Rom staying, then it would be a central midfielder.

Personally, I'd love someone like Gündoğan in the centre of the park. He's powerful, strong, puts a shift in and is intelligent with his movement

He has a wide array of passing ability which is often creative, is comfortable on the ball, but also happy to track back and stick a foot in.

Basically, he's not a crab (in the sense of movement and passing) like our current setup, so would give the tenacity and creativity we thrive.

Also, I think it would free up a lot of pressure on Barkley in front of him, therefore less reliance on finding the much coveted 'number ten'.

After that though, then there's a fair few positions that need strengthening (or deepening) including defence, number ten, wingers and keeper.

Buying into the OP's hypothesis for a few fanciful moments, our current big needs are GK, CB and CM. The spine of this team is so weak it's shambolic.

We should be signing a world class keeper, a commanding CB and a complete CM. We've actually got some decent attacking players out wide and up front: Lennon has a couple of years left in him, Rom is not even in his prime yet and Del is clearly something special. Barkley looks poised to blossom into something special and Mirallas, if used properly, is a proper asset. However if Rom and Mirallas leave, as most (including me) now think they will, then striker gets added to the list of "must-buys" straight away. Yes we need some competition at RB, some choice at LW, cover at 10 and a reliable backup striker, but the spine of the team must come first, in my mind.

Whoever is the manager come the summer, there is some urgent transfer work to be done. Partially because of natural, age-related turnover of the squad (Osman, Pienaar, Hibbert, Barry, and possibly Jags and Baines too)... and partially because some of the squad have been distinctly underwhelming (Kone, Cleverley, McGeady, McCarthy, Gibson). We have to assemble a SQUAD, not just a starting 11.
