I said right at the beginning when he took charge that he'd struggle to overcome years and years of a boot and run, up and under football culture at Everton that had been established here. There was thirst amongst many for a change to a more sophisticated possession based game, but there was a hard core of people weaned on the teat of hoofball who would still offer maximum resistance.
I think it's a mark of his impact here that in three seasons he pretty much had us back playing football in the club's traditions again with players comfortable on the ball, and that reached into the academy where Unsworth carried out the policy there.
A measure of that progress could be seen last season when we saw the team struggle with the reversion to hoofball again at the start of the season prior to Christmas. After that, through injuries forced on us, changes to formation and set up were made and we played the ball again and got the rewards....though the same old cowardice persisted against some good teams we faced.
As much as a wonderful record breaking first season, THAT return to playing the ball on the deck was Martinez's more lasting legacy.
