Everton FA Cup: Thrashes Chelsea to get to Wembley only to totally waste the first half and lose to a beatable United side.
Everton League Cup: wins first leg and goes ahead in the second only to fail to shut up shop and lose.
Everton Europa League: Wins home first leg then concedes 5 away to blow any chance at a European quarterfinal.
Everton in the League: finishes 5th and within range of CL only to never come closer to the CL than relegation ever again.
World Cup: Knocks out Brazil only to barely create a chance against France in a straightforward defeat.
Nations League: Needs to not concede 4 to get to a semifinal. Concedes 5.
Specialist in false hope and epic collapses is what Roberto is.

As for the oft-quoted two semi-finals, we faced one decent team in those two competitions combined before we were beaten in both cups, to a decent Man City team and one of the poorest Man U teams for years.

Your mate Moyes was here for 11 yeras and we were dull as ditchwater to watch and never sniffed a trophy.

We all need a bit of light relief at this grim time so here's a question for all followers of this always entertaining thread. I'm sure most readers will appreciate the relevance of the quote to the management achievements of 'El Maestro', Roberto Martinez.

Who said this (elsewhere on GOT)?

"Cup competition. That's all it is. You play well in the right games and you get the rub of the green and you can end up winners of one. Twas ever thus.

The league, though, is the league. There's no fluking it. You either are an elite team that can take it when the chips are down and you hold your nerve, or you cant. They cant."

Yep, me.

and the point being made is....?

Am I alone in thinking that judging from some of his post match comments, Bobby had just watched a totally different game to the one I did. Bobby’s sounded a good game, everything was phenomenal...whereas the game I’d watched was often very crap.

He was our Brendan Rodgers.

Well done Dave!

You win the now pleasingly defaced mask of Herr Klopp I found last night, presumably discarded yesterday by one of the million or so drooling Koppites who polluted the city.

You don't see any inconsistency in the first line of the quote and your claims about 'El Gaffer's' achievements at Wigan where you suggest cup success is more important than guiding them to relegation?

For instance:
"You can either accentuate his time at Wigan as one of relegation, or the best period on the club's history they would never have got to in a million years with any other manager and securing their one and only trophy."

Compared with:
"Cup competition. That's all it is. You play well in the right games and you get the rub of the green and you can end up winners of one. Twas ever thus."

You're comparing apples with pears. One club has had nothing in its history success-wise until RM came along; the other has had many successes in the league, so a cup win isn't all that.

You're welcome.

Talk about poking the bear with a stick lol

We certainly never got near a trophy under Martinez. I saw plenty of games under him when we were utterly dire. We finished in the bottom half twice in his three years.
You saw the best football played by this club since the 80s.
