It is true that it is not in our interest for Zouma to develop but the best should always take priority over club affiliation. So I hope Silva will have no issues with benching Mason if Zouma is the better performer.
I am confident Marco will see various combinations in training and select the best pairing for us to have the best season we can now. My guess is it will be Mina and Zouma initially but I have complete faith that Holgate is going to be a very decent CB well worth a place in the team.

..for some reason he looked taller yesterday, and certainly appears to have filled out. A bit surprised to see him on the bench given his injury problems and no pre-season but I get the impression Silva has confidence in him.

I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion Mina or Zouma will start ahead of him next week.

I imagine there will be an issue with match fitness as opposed to a genuine injury. If he still had an injury then Digne would have likely been forced to play in there.

I like him a lot. He has a lot of composure and doesn't seem to get phased. Hardly any pre-season matches, playing next to a lad in Keane who's Everton career in somewhat on tenterhooks, having just gone down to 10 men and conceded a goal away at a promoted team. Those are conditions that many a young player would shrink in and have s stinker. He just slotted in though.

He did look a bit bigger too. That was probably the only issue for him, as it is for most young defenders. I hope he keeps filling out. He probably needs to get better in the air. For a 21 year old though he is very impressive.

Not really, it’s a difference between a short term approach for this season and a medium to long term approach. So if Zouma isn’t going to be here next season then better to give Holgate games alongside Mina. If there’s an acknowledgement that we can sign Zouma then play the one who performs best.

Whether we can sign Zouma or not the best defenders should be on the pitch.

TBH I was a little disappointed that we signed 2 CBs as it will mean Holgate is unlikely to start. But team over player and if the we bring in players that cause others to miss and its for the greater good that is life. For me as long as Silva doesn't do what every manager before him has done and pick his favourites irrespective of form. If Zouma and Mina are pulling up trees then play them. But if Holgate is outperforming he must get the nod!. He will get game time though, although defenders are often not pulled from games..
