Our 3rd choice must be good enough to step up should injuries occur. I doubt he is up to it. WBA fans thought he was OK but WB never tried to sign him which says a lot.
 
He has done well in short spurts (3-5 games), so that may be his role here. You have to have players that are okay with being squad members, and Holgate can get the job done as cover. He tends to struggle the more he plays.

I’m always worried whenever he’s on the ball. He’s always susceptible to rash challenges in the box too.

I get the point on the versatility, but I think we need better defenders at the club.

I think part of that is just our perception/expectation as fans. It happens a lot with academy players too. They come in for a game or 2 and you think they're acquitting themselves pretty well all things considered, but the more you see of them the more you start to realise what they're lacking, and the leeway you were giving them to start with starts to fade as you expect them to function like a proper first teamer. Holgate is error prone in my opinion, and the longer he plays for the more errors you notice.

Because he's not a very good decision maker and too confident in his mediocre abilities, especially in distribution. I'd love for him to.be this slick, ball playing center half, but he's simply not good enough with the ball. Takes too many risks as a CB and its not due the pressure and might just be innate rather than inexperience.

We do. But unless the nettle is grasped and we decided to use Coleman as back-up not a starter, then we're unlikely to get that much better than Holgate.

I agree, there is no chance of playing out from the back if he’s playing CB for us.
