2020/21 Mason Holgate

Interesting that Ancelotti has played him and Godfrey for two games in a row. It's either tactical and he wants pacier centrebacks or Mina & Keane are not fit to start.

Doesn't really matter, but as a pairing they're both relatively junior in the sense neither has 'led' a defence before. Holgate I'm particular strikes me as one who benefits from an experienced pro with him.

I'm actually interested in how both respond. This is a huge opportunity and learning curve for both. Holgate particularly is starting to hit the stage where he'll need to take on the role of a senior player in the coming years.

Oh, and tactically, we've still ended up deep.

But I blame that on our propensity to be pressed back. Watch how teams target Gomes. Boom, backwards.

New LB and RBs needed badly, we have nothing out wide. Nothing. Just so sick of Digne being bullied time and again on the overlap, every time he gets it, some opposition grock just muscles him out and we lose the ball. Again.
Maybe it's coincidence, but he's been absolutely garbage since having his first child.

Seeing us offer literally nothing on both wings is throughly infuriating. It's no wonder our players always end up passing it backwards.

Do we have a winger in the entire squad, even?

Bernard? Well, he's proven himself to be nowhere near what's needed and we were desperately trying to offload him in January.

Iwobi? No words to describe how bad he is.

How can a team not have even one decent wide midfield player? Unreal!

Must be the only club in world football that gets worse the more money it spends.

Yes, all of his advanced football power left him when he donated his semen

Holgate as a touch of the Heitingas about him. CB is his best position and he can also cover RB and DM in an emergency. Unfortunately like Heitinga unless he has a strong partner he seems to get exposed. When we had Heitinga, Jagielka and Distin our best 2 CBs were Heitinga and Jagielka however they could not play together. This meant if they were all fit it was usually Jagielka Distin as Jagielka was club captain.

Godfrey is the best CB at the club in my opinion so if he plays unfortunately Holgate can't unless it's a 3. Holgate is an ideal squad player as he can cover CB and is equally comfortable on the right or left which not all CBs are he can also in emergencies cover RB, LB, DM. Whether he would be happy with this long term is questionable. If we went to 3 at the back as default formation he would be a starter for me.

I think him chewing gum has made him an easy target for some on here. A bit like Tom Davies with his long hair and exuberant clothes people will jump on anything. He made an absolute ricket the other night and he will be dropped for it but to say he is a dreadful player is miles from the mark. A couple of years ago Michael Keane gave a goal away against Leicester that cost us a game. He then went on to have a purple patch where people were saying he was undrinkable. Players will always make mistakes its the nature of the beast.

With a bit of luck Holgate will learn from that error and next time he gets a chance will not make it again.

Hes not mediocre, hes also not an all-time great.

The lad made an error, it happens to the best of them.

I mean I suggested he would be sold in the summer a few months ago and everybody told me I was mad and he was our best CB.
I thought he has some qualities. But the more I see of him the more I'm asking questions. I think people mention the chewing gum due to his new found false confidence. His body demeanor has definitely changed this season for whatever reason. What use to be a feisty player with a bit of snide has changed into a strutter.

I keep him as a squad player. Not my preferred starter, for me he needs to get back some of his honesty.

This is spot on. Attitude has changed this year which is odd. I would not have a problem with him being a ‘strutter’ if his standard of play merited it but Franz Beckenbauer he is noto_O

Distin was better than heitinger

Distin was better than heitinger

Heitinga won player of the year twice. A lot of people judge him on the last season of Moyes when he seemed to lose interest. He lost interest because although he won player of the year for 2nd time Moyes dropped him again at start of the season. Distin made more errors than Heitinga but his pace covered them up. Also Distin made that unforgivable error in the semi.
