We've probably all worked for a really effective boss, and, metaphorically, you would take the bullet for them. Conversely, a chief you just do not rate, you would be more willing to aim the bullet at them.

The difference being that, despite obscene salaries, they wish to be at their best and show professionalism. Being made to perform in an unnatural style/position affects performance, with the added joy that their entire game is being scrutinised by, well, the entire world these days, which only leads to more uncertainty.
Under such scrutiny, a poor tactic leads to a poor performance, which in turn affects their entire game. Ergo, confidence is shot and often a Mr. Hyde appears which they will hide behind.
