2022/23 Mason Holgate

The fact that the manager thought he would be the best fit for a place at right back was alarming.

He’s had a couple of decent spells in his career here. But overall he’s been awful, hasn’t developed and it highlights how poor we are at the top of the club

Brands also decided not to buy another right back (making Sidibe perm or Dumfries being the other) because he thought Holgate and Kenny were fine to replace Coleman.

Standard operating procedure

Jeez if you are picking Godfrey and Holgate ahead of Patterson he must be bad.
Now I could write that off as Dyche being a bit of a dinosaur and preferring " tried and not so trusted" but unfortunately our 2 previous managers don't appear to place that much trust in him ( although he did get a brief run under Lampard)

After Seamus is he the longest server in the squad? Pretty sure he was signed in 2015?

I thought he'd go last summer. Infact with Coady and Patterson coming in he really should've been sold to someone but guess that injury Godfrey got on the opening day meant he got yet another stay of execution.

Presume the old cliched “I want to stay to fight for my place and help this team and the fans achieve what we deserve etc etc etc”. The fact that he’s never begging to be sold to actually play somewhere every week (which he is more than capable of at some level) tells you he is a loving working from 9am till lunch time every day and having the weekends off. Presumably hangs around with Tom etc. but properly wasting his career, even though it should be in the championship.

Effort and aggression - good.
Ability - acceptable/average.
Footballing IQ - cat sick
Ability to give dangerous free kicks away around the box in the last 5 minutes - world class

Is it any surprise we've earned the "Once Everton has touched you..." motto when we've been slinging gigantic contracts at crap players for almost two decades?

Mason is an Evertonian for life having been aboard the EFC Gravy Train for the best part of 10 years. Unreal.

It must be why all the players look high on life in the training videos as they know they're guaranteed their riches with absolutely no expectation placed on them.

Play crap? You're still in the team. Injured for your entire contract? Not a problem. Fancy a loan somewhere nice and warm in Europe? Everton will facilitate that for you.

Did Brands or Walsh come up with this rating system? Explains much.
