2022/23 Mason Holgate

Is it any surprise we've earned the "Once Everton has touched you..." motto when we've been slinging gigantic contracts at crap players for almost two decades?

Mason is an Evertonian for life having been aboard the EFC Gravy Train for the best part of 10 years. Unreal.

It must be why all the players look high on life in the training videos as they know they're guaranteed their riches with absolutely no expectation placed on them.

Play crap? You're still in the team. Injured for your entire contract? Not a problem. Fancy a loan somewhere nice and warm in Europe? Everton will facilitate that for you.
Anything better than the 15 grand they would probably be picking up if they dropped to Championship

Presume the old cliched “I want to stay to fight for my place and help this team and the fans achieve what we deserve etc etc etc”. The fact that he’s never begging to be sold to actually play somewhere every week (which he is more than capable of at some level) tells you he is a loving working from 9am till lunch time every day and having the weekends off. Presumably hangs around with Tom etc. but properly wasting his career, even though it should be in the championship.

Effort and aggression - good.
Ability - acceptable/average.
Footballing IQ - cat sick
Ability to give dangerous free kicks away around the box in the last 5 minutes - world class

He had a decent loan at West Brom in 18/19. Was a regular in team that just missed out on Automatics. Next season should've been the point where he either nailed down another permanent slot or just moved on.

He's been here five more years than Godfrey who plenty want to move on now.

He did nail down a place though, once Silva had gone and the Fergie/Ancelotti crossover era came he was in the side, playing reasonably enough to be touted for an England call up and on the back of those performances he got his new 5 year deal. Then Lockdown happened and when play resumed he picked up a couple of injuries and when back Ancelotti mainly played him at RB, all downhill since then.

On the upside, he might be good for a goal.

On the downside, he might be very good for two goals - for them.

Prediction: Penalty concession, sending-off, faux-macho chewing of gum on the sullen, aggressive walk to the touchline.
