2024/25 Mason Holgate

Prime Everton that Godfrey (who was a decent option) goes to a champions league side, and that Mason Holgate could go to the biggest side in Holland...

It started brightly and ended quickly, I don't dislike the fella, it's the manager who put him on Saturday that deserves the flack.

I hope he goes for all involved, wish him luck where ever he goes, no need for the vitriol.

He's only done what we all would have done, accept a contract.

I’d love to know what actually happens when a player is sold before their contract ends. Is the player still entitled to the remainder of his wages or what?

It makes a difference on a case like Holgate. For example, say we find someone willing to pay 2 or 3 million for him (which isn’t that far fetched imo). Does that 3 million then go to Everton, or does it go to Holgate, as that’s how much wages remain on his contract?

No mate, otherwise you'd hardly ever see players sold with a few years left on their contract.

Club's can give a player a golden handshake ofc, usually described as a loyalty bonus - think we actually did to Richy btw. Fellaini from memory turned it down to help get the move to united done.

Only way a club has to pay the remainder of a players contract is if they terminate it and release the player with time left. It's why we continued paying Iceland whilst suspended rather than release him.
