..I'd be nervous of playing him one of two CBs. He was fine playing in a three but the Stoke game seems to have set him back.

Day after the event, suppose one 'good' thing that came out that mauling yesterday is that our need for 2-3 centre backs who are actually quality is now clearer than ever, over to you Moshiri to show your ambition, we can't be going into next season with any of the current cb's on the books starting for us.

Kinda helps get over it not being within 6,000 km of any Koppites mind

...yep, pity us but it's getting to a stage where it's taken for granted in the city. Saying that, Siberia would be ok today!!

I thought Connolly was great the final game of last season. How those 3 are above him at RB, apart from Holgate, is surprising.

Connolly didnt play in that game mate, Pennington started at right back and came off with an injury after half an hour and Kenny came on, put an assist in for Mirrallas as well, sure it's not him your getting mistaken with?

Think he played in the soton game close to the end of the season

Yes, my bad. Kenny impressed me that match. Thanks for the reminder.
Where did I see Connolly play and impress me ? Hmmm.

Yeah Connolly played about 20-25 mins as a sub , think it was Southampton. I m a great Connolly fan , but the same issues apply with him as do all the other young defenders , how to give them experience at PL level when they will often be exposed and make mistakes in the beginnning . Patience and time are needed with all of them, and it is often counterproductive to play too many of them in one game. I think Holgate , or even Pennington/ Kenny would have been fine at right back in a back four with 3 other experienced defenders , a wonderful thing hindsight. We shouldn't give up on Holgate or the others though , we need to keep nurturing them .

He was playing right wing back....take a step back and imagine Jags or Williams playing there. The closest example would have been Stones I suppose and its fair to say he would be useless there.

In terms of defending, remember Coleman at benfica? That was a right back playing left back so logically still in a full back position and should know what to do...yesterday we saw a centre back playing right wing back.

One thing I noticed yesterday was Pennington...he subconsciously stood out for me (possibly because I was wondering how he would do)and I thought he looked atrocious. Many times Holgate had 2 v 1 situations and while he didn't win 50% of them I think he did as best he could.

So to say someone has regressed when they are not only massively out of position but also playing next to Pennington (who had a shocker) is unfair...

Of all the defenders, He is the one id keep and have faith in starting off next season.

You didn't read what I said. Forget positions he has lost the knack of defending, tackling. Too easy to get past him, roll him. Far too easy.
