Not for me right now. He needs to grow in stature to be a Dennis Irwin type. Sure he snarls a bit, but you need more than that to be captain. Soon enough though, I think. To me the only one with the gravitas for captain is the GK...but I always think it's a waste of time giving it to someone who cant, by position, really get involved in the outfield action or events of a disciplinary nature further up the pitch.
I don't think we have a real leader yet this season.
That's part of the problem!
On form it would be Naismith by application alone but he won't be 1st choice all season

A year or so left as a starter is what I was stating, don't forget we gave Hibbert a 2 year deal and he doesn't even make the squad

Eh. Fair point.

Based on the latter part of last season and the start of this there's absolutely no way he should have been given such a contract.

Really? I don't see anything wrong with his performances...

The lad has a desire to play. If he has a dip in form and loses his place, he'll be off. He won't sit on the bench picking up wages whilst running his contract down.

People seem to think we can't drop the captain?
Jags is the captain, but if he needs to be dropped someone else will be captain.
McCarthy is still developing. Doesn't need captaincy.

not captain material for me needs to concentrate on his own game first and foremost.

we have no proper leaders on the pitch unfortunately.

He needs top close his man down when they are nearing the penalty area, has stood off so many times. Needs sorting out. Other than that, I like him.

Distin has been an absolute liability this season. He is the one that needs dropped.

Why didnt he close down Costa for the first goal, he could easily have got to him instead of striding back and then turning round to blame Jags.
Infact I believe Distin has been personally responsible for 4 of our 10 goals this season, where as even if Per Kroldrup had been playing then 0 goals would have been scored.

Interesting commentary on McCarthy.....

Leeds United legend and former Republic of Ireland manager John Giles says that James McCarthy needs to stop letting games pass him by if he wants to become a great midfielder.
McCarthy was one of Everton's better players last season and many Evertonians felt he was a pivotal part of the push to finish fifth in the Premier League, but Giles seems to think that he lacks the mentality to control the big games.

“He has the ability which is one thing,” he said. “The mind is a different thing altogether. He has to impose himself more I think. But all lads are different and he might have a mentality where he thinks ‘I don’t want to do that’.

“He has the ability but you have to demand the ball and I’ve seen him in matches when he’s in good positions but he doesn’t demand it.

“When you’re playing football and if you’re on the ball as a fullback, you can’t think of everything. You don’t know if I’m in a good position because your mind is occupied with doing something else.

“If you shout your name loud, you get all that stuff out of your head and that’s demanding the ball. With McCarthy I don’t think he says anything and he lets you kick it up the line. The game is passing him by.

“He has the ability; I have seen him knock the ball 40 yards but it’s no good if you don’t let your team-mate know you’re there and I haven’t seen him do that yet.”

I'm going to start a campaign for McCarthy to be captain over jags.
Jags has lost it in my opinion and doesn't deserve to be captain anymore, I feel McCarthy would make a great captain and yes I know he's only young but he is hungry for the ball, doesn't shy away from a challenge, mops up after the midfielders and protects the defence. He already runs the team so why not give him the arm band?

Oh my oh my !!

There's gonna be some serious vaulting when Jags is awesome again very very shortly.

I'm unsure why any of the attributes you've pointed out here make him a worthy captain?

Because he's a good centre midfielder?

Plus whilst I agree Jagielka should be dropped after the Chelsea game, stripping him of the captaincy 3 games into the season seems absolutely bonkers to me. What are the advantages?

I have every faith that jags wills come back as strong as ever.

This this thread is a bit of a knee jerk to say the least to be honest
