Messi

Liverpool's owners would never be willing to outlay the money required to bring Messi in when you consider his astronomical wages and likely signing on fee.

For all his ability and world reach in terms of advertisements, commercially it simply wouldn't follow their prudent model based on even a % of his wages.

I don't think even City are going to be able to do it now they've paid out £100m for Grealish and probably still need a true forward, which points to Kane.

The PL spending rules and FFP would have them (City) bent over before they know, so there's no way the RS would take that kind of risk.

For me, it's either PSG, he accepts a massive wage reduction to stay at Barca or there's a curve ball in terms of the MLS.

I agree, I was just saying it's just about feasible.

He had already agreed to more than half his wages prior to this, be surprised if he now agrees to lower them further

Is it not what happened, albeit on a smaller scale, with Frank Lampard? Went to NYC, and went to City for a little bit on loan?

Messi to the MLS makes logical sense to me, whilst his stock is guaranteed to be high, get your Beckham deal, and avoid ever playing Barça.
That was the sort of thing I was thinking. Just looked back into that and it was controversial but for a different reason. NYC said they had signed him but were loaning him to Man City for the 6 months prior to their first season in the MLS. But then City kept him and it turned out he'd never actually signed for NYC. Seems as though it was done that way to soften him moving directly from Chelsea to Man City and also to drum up interest in NYC ahead of their first season.

But still, it shows they are up for shenanigans between their clubs. Similar thing happened with David Villa at NYC and Melbourne City.

From what I read, he was apparently going to take a 50% wage cut in terms of current wages in conjunction with a five-year deal, which would take him to 39!

If there was any transfer before then, they would have to still honour the contract too or something along those lines (yes, very bizarre).

So in reality it was the same wage he was on now for a two or three year deal and spread out over a longer period. But you're right, it's unlikely he'd take less.

He didn't though. Amazingly he would have only seen out two and a half years max of that Barca contract but been paid up for the full five years.

So same wage but spread out for financial purposes.

Would have been a financial disaster for Barca.

Semi-serious. They're pretending they can't spend but they haven't spent daft money in terms of net spend over the last two years and have been very successful over that time period. They also have a few players they can ship out too like Shaqiri.

I think they could afford him just about, when you take in the commercial/reputational benefits of the move too.

But mostly I'm just thinking out loud about clubs beyond PSG/City that could possibly do it. In reality the list ends with those two, Liverpool a distant third.
No chance. They have the 2nd highest wage bill in the league already and still have about 4 of their first 11 to re-sign.

I guess it makes sense, why Barca are still pursuing the super league, I wonder how things are for Real as they're still pursuing it too
